sunroof motor?

hey guys my FIRST POST here woo hoo! im 16 and i got my permit, license comes in 2 months...

just bought my new 1995 saturn sc2 (5 speed manual of course :iceslolan) as is from a dealership and the car came with a factory installed sunroof. when i press the open button, the roof doesnt budge. i checked the fuse for the motor but its still good. i was wondering how much it would cost to change the motor, and if i could buy the parts and do it myself or if had to bring it to a shop to have done. im only half knowledgeable about cars, my dad was a mechanic for a while in his life so he could do most simple to moderately hard repairs if need be.

u know, i have a problem with my sunroof not closing. the fuse is good, no clue what it is

Yeah, i have a 1995 Saturn SC1, and my sunroof is messed up also, it wont close all the way, and when i close my door, it pops up, and makes a lot of wind noise. Also, I believe it is off of it's track, because it wont open and close normally. I replaced the motor for it and the little black box with the computer chips in it, and that wasn't the problem, if anyone knows what the deal is, please respond, or email me.

Does it make any sound at all when you press the button in either direction?

A problem like yours is difficult to diagnose on the internet. If it's an electrical problem, possible causes are the switch itself, the sunroof relay, which is located above the switch, near the motor, or the motor itself.

If you're attempting to repair it yourself, you'll need to find out where the power stops. Probably the easiest way to start would be to disconnect the large electrical connector from the motor and check for power at the terminals with a test light while depressing the switch. If you have power at the motor, you'll likely need a new motor assuming there are no mechanical problems with the roof such as broken tracks, locators, cables, etc...

All of these parts can be expensive, so accurately diagnosing it will be easier on your wallet.

yeah, i hear a faint click of the motor trying to move, you gotta listen for it. ill have to bring it to my mechanic to be looked at. i gotta get a new steering pump for it anyways so why not have it looked at.
