'93 and earlier question for potential owner

I'm considering getting an early 90's montero in a few months and have heard mostly good things about them. What other problem areas are there besides the steering problem and short clutch life? I've also heard conflicting stories about fuel economy with some saying 15-16mpg overall and others claiming over 20. Enlighten me please.

i would highly recommend getting an early model montero; although i'd recommend the 90 or 91 before the 92, simply because of a first year change in body style in 92. they're all incredibly solid, however. i have a 91 that is without a doubt the best 4x4 i've ever owned. reliable, can't beat the 4wd system (i had to pull my own 96 land rover out of the mud with my 91 and pull other 4x4's out of snowbanks on a regular basis!) gas mileage on my 91 5-speed is about 17-18 around town and 21 or so on the highway. but be aware of something: if you're willing to be conservative, these montys will get you 24 mpg on the hwy IF you're willing to set the cruise at 55-ish ... if you, on the other hand, set it at, say, in the low 70s, you won't break 20 mpg on the highway.

Galixie500 is right except I have not heard of anyone getting over 18mpg, except when coasting down hill. They are not fuel efficient but fantastic off road.
