Saturn speed control devices??

Hello,

I read a post on this board ("What can i do to get rid of the govener on my Saturn?") the author George indicated he had a speed control device and that it was standard on most newer Saturns. I have never even heard of the device let alone that it was currently being installed in vehicles. I tried to search on the internet but found no mention on the device being installed other than manual owner installation. The device I saw helped you maintain speed limit similiar to cruise control.

Does anyone have any more info?
Are they being installed on new vehicles?
Is it an optional device?
How exactly does it work? IE an alarm, just a block? car just won't go any faster? George indicated it would not allow him to go over 100mph...
It seems to me that depends on the car. lol my friend has a brand new escort and she's lucky if the think will do 80...horsepower? that thing has gerbil power...LOL

Speed limiter is governed by the PCM. To remove the speed limit you either have to reprogram the PCM, add a "special chip" or install a complete standalone fuel management system.

Almost all vehicles 1998 and newer have the speed limited, usually around 105 mph. All my saturns are limited at 110 mph no matter what gear you are in. :disappoin

Since its inception the Saturn S-Series has been speed limited by the PCM. Depending on the engine/bodystyle/tire combination it should be limited at either 127 mph or 114mph. I have yet to find a race track where I could (or would want to) go faster than this in a Saturn.

Cheers,
Brian

this is not just a saturn thing though, just about every car that is computer controlled has a rev limiting device and/or a speed limiter. this is not to keep you from going fast, but to keep you from damaging your powertrain. its there for a reason, so dont mess with it.

yeah, unless you have a fully blown race engine and powertrain to boot, modiflying the PCM limiters would be dangerius

I believe the computer basically starts retarding the timing. Thus, you can't go any faster than what it is programmed for. I believe that 95 was the last year for the 127-130 mph limit. In 96 it was lowered to 100-110 area. I have a stock 95 sl2 that will reach up to about 130. Ask me how I know.

i was told it kills the fuel injectors until you slow back down to 127 or whatever
