I have two GM products. A Chevy Impala 2001,and GMC Safari 1994. Would you believe I am having the same problem with both? They have a 5 speed blower speeds. They ONLY work on 4&5. Whats up with this? Anyone else having a problem like this. I replaced the whole heater/ac control assembly on the Impala. Still the same only two top speeds. Thanks for any replies.

I am having the same problem, only mine only operates on the highest setting. What is involed with replacing the blower resistor switch, I assume the dash needs to come out to get to the switch. Any hints would be appreciated. I have a 1995 Caprice Classic.

Thanks!

Thanks. I also fouond out that the part is a "dealer" item only.

Typically, blower motor resistors are dealer only items. I work at a Ford dealership. The resistor for the Taurus, for example, is underneath the glove box. My 1991 Century's resistor is located rather conveniently in the engine compartment. I'd say either try your local dealership, or give this site a try: www.genuineoem.com We run that site and discount all OEM (GM, Ford, Mopar, Kia, etc...) prices 20%.

Chances are it is resistor assembly. Just had to have mine replaced on Impala-

On GM w-bodies, it's inside the car, in the heater box near the blower motor. On the Astro, it is mounted under the hood, but still in close proximity to the blower motor.

The blower motor resistors are a common failure on W-body cars. The most common cause is that when you replace your cabin air filter, you don't seal it well (either the foam surround or the plastic cover at the bottom of the windshield). As time goes, on, water leaks in and rusts the bearing in the blower motor. It becomes harder to turn and the low speed resistor blows. If you notice a hum from it at low speed settings, you may want to consider replacing the blower motor.
