muffler question

I have a crack around the exhaust pipe that goes into the long round muffler. I assume it is the muffler. It is after the cat, and under the car NOT by the bumper. I have tried using muffler weld but it has not helped. Since the whole exhaust is all one piece I guess I would just cut the muffler out and put in a new one. Have anyone done this? What parts do I need? What size exhaust pipe is on the 99 SL2? Any help would be great!!
Thanks,
Brad

Interestingly, I have the same problem. This "muffler" is really the resonator. It tends to develop leaks around the rear seam of the resonator.
I was going to replace it with another one, but hate to shell out the money for a new Saturn piece.
On my 1998 SL2, the outlet pipe is 1.75 OD. I have not found an aftermarket replacemet yet. Muffler weld doesn't seem to hold.
Suggestions welcome.

31rx7,
Thanks for the reply. Do you know how to properly jack up the car with a 3 1/2 ton floor jack? I am not sure where to place it to lift the front.
Any help would be great!
Thanks,
Brad

When I need to raise the front of the car and put it on jack stands, I
- Jack it up on one side part of the way
- Put some 2x8 wood boards under the tire (the boards are bolted together to make a single piece)
- Let the jack down
- Go to the other side and jack it up to the desired height
- Set the jack stand on this side
- Go back to the first side and jack it up the rest of the way and set the jack stand.
You have to be careful to ensure the floor jack rolls when jacking up from the side, or it will force the car off the first jack stand.
There must be a better way to raise the entire front end at once, but I do not know what it is.

Thanks for the reply on jacking. Where exactly under the car do you place the head of the jack? On the side rail? Somewhere else?? I am not sure and I do not want to do damage. Thanks for all the help

I jack it up where the subframe mounts to the unibody.

Hey guys, if you're looking for an aftermarket performance exhaust system (which includes a new resonator with no leaks lol) then check out www.saturnmotorsports.com . this site is great for powerful upgrades. There's an HKS cat back system that's around $475 but i have it on my 1995 sl2 and its WONDERFUL. i disconnected the axle back system and ran a straight pipe out the side of my car and it sounds AMAZING. this system is a whopping 2" mandrel bent exhaust system that frees up a great deal of low end torque. IM me if u have questions

the sway bar can with stand the weight long enough to get jacks under the engine cradle or sides. just make sure you put the jack in the middle!!
Remus is the way to go! or just get it bent custom thats what I did

ok
none of you are allowed to touch your vehicles.
there are jack points behind each front tire and in front of each rear tire. DO NOT PUT IT ON THE SWAY BAR. thats just a bad idea waiting to go wrong. you can goto autozone and customize your own exhaust with some 2.5" piping and just get a muffler for it. or get a custom mandrel bent... be prepared for tickets if you go big
