Are you talking how much it can take regularly, or how much it can take without exploding after one run?

lets go wtih both

I've heard 18psi is absolute maximum boost without causing damage. At 17psi I get a regular fuel cut, so I've set 16.5psi as my personal maximum boost.
I also still have the stock boost gauge and have heard it is not very accurate. Can anyone address this? I created this graphic to help me figure where on my gauge 16.5psi is:

The engine can handle a significant amount, not sure of the exact rating. The stock turbo however will explode at 18 psi with extended use or even 1 racing run. Larger turbo will make it so you can run a higher boost but you'll need fuel management etc at which you can change fuel cut off's i believe with say the Turboxs Utec ECU.

Stytch is correct, 16.5 psi seems to be the maximum reliable boost.

can u set any ecu so u have two maps and u can change between them and go form 16 or so psi to like 10 psi so for trips and normal driving ur under no stress?

Bob, it'd be best to do that from a good ol' EBC like a PRofec B Spec II. Most ECUs have you manually change the boost setting closed-loop (so the ECU has no communication with the boost level), so using an EBC with two settings wouldn't effect it.
Now, I'm curious about the turbo exploding at 18psi. A [VERY STUPID] friend of mine did a single 0-100 run at 22psi on the stock turbo, intake and exhaust. While there was detonation galore, the car held together (and absolutely dominated the 550hp M5 it was racing). Basically, DON'T DO THIS, but it doesn't literally explode at 18psi.

He got pretty lucky then. Turbo Magazine i believe was messing with a wrx and ran the boost at 18 psi for a single 1/4 mile run the the turbo went bye bye as well as #3 cylinder.

mb38 im no ur ecu doesnt mess with boost but i am jsut asking if u can have two different maps on it cuz if u have it tuned for 16psi and then go to 10 on ur boost controler on the same fule map its not gunna run as well

Of course you could.

Hello I am new to this forum I am running a Turbo XS Utec stage 4 with Perrin fuel rails and many more mods. I have been running 1.3 bar (18.85psi)for about 20,000 miles, I have hit up to 1.5 bar(21.75psi) due to boost creep it scared the heck out of me but it did not blow up, but it pulled like a son of a @#$%*!! My boost cut is set at 22 psi on the utec. My point is with proper tuning you can hold 18 to 19 psi on stock internals but do not expect to get over 100,000 miles on it I am at 46,000 miles and it still fells strong but I will not be suprised when it does finaly blow. When it does then I will build a engine that will hold 21 psi all day because I am now a boost fiend!!!!!!!!!!! :evillol:

ok I got a question. the STI has water injection right? has anyone though of a way to turn the pump up to increse the flow?? Also has anyone done research on using denatured alcohol? Us Turbo buick guys use the SMC alky kit and I can run 24 PSI on pump gas. I realize that your cars flow better than mine so thats why your 16.5 PSI is probabally about equal to my 20. I was just wondering

The sti has a intercooler water spray system not injection, it only sprays the surface of the intercooler, but there are people running water alcohol injection with much success ( this is all part of my 21psi daily monster :evillol: )
