Loud Engine noise

I have a 1992 SC Coupe I was just given for free from my Cousin. It has 92, 000 miles on it. The car looks in great shape, it drives smooth. But in the front under the hood there is a lound engine noise almost like there is no muffler on the car, you acutally hear it loud inside th car also. But the sound is in the front. After about 15 min of warming up the car the sound is gone. A freind suggested there could be a crack in the manifold. Any ideas? Would it be expensive to fix?

At first I woulda said cracked manifold or something like that, becuase from what you are saying it sounds like it would be an exhaust leak, but what confuses me about it is that it stops after a little bit and that doesn't make any sense if in fact it is an exhaust leak. so I'm basically clueless. But I would say check all around under the hood to see if there is a leak anywhere.

My 95 Saturn SC-1 squeaked badly when i got it, and I ended up having to replace the Tensioner Pulley assembly. I'm not sure if this is what you're talking about, but if so, i hope i helped, if not, just thought I'd try.

bring it to a dealer or mechanic and have it looked at. it never hurts to look. it could be something serious costing alot of money or it could be something little. you never know.

i know i'm over 6 years late on this topic but for future individuals who view this i wanted to get in on the action. I had the exact same problem with my '94 SL1 where it would sound like a big-rig truck until the engine warmed up and then it would be fine. It actually ended up being the motor mount located on the left side of the engine block next to the belts. i found a replacement at a junkyard i frequent when i need parts and its ran great and quiet ever since

It could also still be a manifold issue, most likely gasket, when the engine warms up the manifold expands sealing the leak up.
