Candy color questions.

I checked the FAQ thread but I couldn't find anything on candy colors. What are the steps on appling candies?

Prime - sand - base coat? - top coat? - flake? -

I don't have a airbrush, so I will be using cans. I'm looking to get a candy orange/tangerine with metalflake for the Mystery Machine (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=148166)

I don't sand after I prime, but thats not important right now. I thought that the flake went under the base. I'm not sure. I sure someone here can answer that though.

I once had a car (real one) that I did in blue flake. On that it was base coated (in black) then the blue flake was mixed in with clear laquer and applied over the top until the blue flakes entirely covered the black base. Then a ton of clear coats went over the top... I guess this would be candy in your case.
I'd say find a mettalic orange as near to the colour you want as possible. Put that on your primer, then apply your flake. Finally apply candy then clear. One a model there's no way you could do it the way I did it on a car as the paint would be too thick so if you can base it in a mettalic orange you won't need to get complete coverage with the flake but still get a sparkly effect. Incidentally I used 26 litres of paint to do my real car! :eek7:

Where do you plan to get flake in a spray can? I have seen a few coarse mettalic paints which would pass for flake on a model but the only actual flake spray paint I have seen had very little flake in a lot of clear laquer... not sure how well it would work on a model.

It really depends on what your doing.. Candy is a really fun paint that can be put on lots of diff ways.. but basically it will go
1)prime and block down.. repeat as needed
2)base coat
3)candy color
4) clear mixed with flake
5)straight clear
Thats a basic way of putting it on.. You can also mix flake in with the candy, mix diff color flakes in with candy and one with clear then clear over it all.. You can put diff color base coats to get totally diff end colors. Also the amount of coats on the candy will make a diff in how it looks in the end.. the more coats the darker the shade.. Candy is a tranparent paint meaning you can see through it.. Do a search for a house of kolors paint chip book online and look at the candy colors.. It shows how each candy looks with each base color.. Hope that helps ya some.. Oh yea.. never put flake in the top coats, flake dont sit down flat and when ya polish it out it will actually cut the flake down making it look terrable.. Good luck.. This order of these two also depends on what effect you want. If you want say, a blue candy with silver flake then the candy goes on first but if you wanted blue candy with blue flakes you can either buy blue flakes or use silver flakes before putting the candy on. Likewise you can use a gold flake under a blue candy and end up with a wicked color that looks dark blue but sparkles green on the edges caught by the light.
You will still want a base coat, probably mettalic under it which ever way you go as getting full flake coverage on a model would be difficult due to the number of coats required.

This is Hok candy tangerine with gold flake in the candy and in the clear.. Lots of flake..Oh the base was orion silver.. Sorry bout the bad pic just giving ya an idea of it..

when you say you "mix alot of flake in with the paint/clear" could you give me an example of what is a lot.
