ION Redline

Just heard about the new 04-05 ION Redline, but details are still sketchy. From what I hear it is going to give the Dodge SRT-4 a run for its money at being the fastest car available for less then 20 G's. (200 HP @Unknow and 200 Lb-ft@ Unknown) I was wondering if anyone had some more details on the new ION and how it might stack up against the SRT-4.

there's a 1/2 page first drive in this month's motor trend (dec 2003) and a full page article in sport compact car. motor trend was estimating it would get 0-60 in 6.0 seconds.

whatever the speed is, it's not going to be faster than an srt-4 which had is stock hp upped to 230

does n-e-1 know what the aftermarket potential is looking like for the ion redline?

Hopefully someone will make a dash kit to reposition the guages above the steering wheel :)

Seriously, this is about the only new car on the market I would be interested in buying. I went to the dealership and they didn't have any details, except that it would be here in January. And it could be faster than the SRT-4, there's more to how fast a car is than how much horsepower it has.

I suspect that there will eventually be alot of parts for those motors. Chevy is coming out with a car called the cobalt in 2005, and guess what kind of motor it has? 2.0 supercharged. I dont know if its ecotec or not but it probably is. The ion and the cobalt even look simular in some ways. Anyway point being if both chevy and saturn are teaming up on this supercharged motor there should be more aftermarket parts made for it.

I just looked up the redline. Not bad. But I was hoping for turbo :)

Chevy and Saturn team up? They are owned by the same company. General Motors.

In Sport Compact tuner (I think) they have an Ion Redline at the Bonneville Salt Flats. They broke the current record for the fastest I4.

Nice! What categories did it run in? The last fastest i4-gas, and i4-other was that vortech civic. It ran like almost 180 on gas and a little faster on alky if I remember correctly.

I just looked it up http://www.new-cars.com/news/031017-saturn-ion-red-line-record.htm

It does not look like they took the gas record though, since that was a drag engine.

For what? The supercharger makes instant power, no winding into the power band, instant power. Plus this year people will get their chevy cobalt W/ ecotec power and a turbo.

ps. boo turbo!

Tell that to the srt-4 guys.

I am very happy that the american car companies are finally starting to take the sport compact market seriously. In 3 years I will sell my sc2 and buy an srt-4 for dirt cheap hopefully :)

I just looked up the cobalt. Did not know it existed... But it is sc also.

BTW, keep sc's on v8's. A turbo 4 will rape an sc'ed 4.

The ION that set the landspeed record was turbocharged rather than the Redline's supercharged system. It was in the G/Blown Fuel Altered class, which means it was gas-burning, blown (ie, turboed), and the body was altered slightly. The engine was still mostly the same as a stock ION. And, by the way, it *destroyed* the previously held record (by a Honda Civic) by 30mph. 212.6mph in a four-banger. How sweet would that be? Oh, and by the way, the engineers said that if they'd had another day at the Bonneville flats, they'd have gotten another 5 or 6mph out of it.

And also, to gt50, I wouldn't waste my money on the srt4. As fast as it is (and it is fast, don't get me wrong), it's even less reliable than the regular Neons. With the money you'll spend fixing it, you might as well have gotten the Redline and upgraded the 'charger. Or, better yet, in 3 years buy an STi or an Evo used for cheap.

That civic still has the gas record though doesn't it :-P That civic used a centrifugal sc to get that power(belt driven turbo :)). There are street b series turbo motors that make more power than than setup.

I have a wrx already with light mods. I have considered trading it in for an evo, but the interior on the evo is fugly. Hopefully there will be a redisign of the evo next year. Rumors have a 2.4 in the works for the us spec model, and hopefully better interior. The boxer engine configuration in the wrx's puts the turbo too far away from the engine. The evo is a much better setup for big power...for now. With more R&D the wrxs/sti's will be there also.

The srt-4 would replace my sc2 as my work car, so if it breaks I would just drive the wrx, or whatever I may own by then.

The Saturn was gas-powered, and it holds the record over the Honda as of this posting. The Japs may come back and take it again, just out of spite, but the Saturn is the king of the mountain right now.

FYI, i know this is an old thread, so maybe this is old news. My fiance just bought the ion2, and it is awesome. I was talking to a guy at the dealer, and he seemed to have the inside scoop on the ion. He says that gm already has the parts (you can order them right now through your saturn dealer) that will put any ion to 500 hp, and with more modification and some custom work on your end, you can push the 700 hp mark. his only remark was to make sure you got the room on your mastercard....

wow, 500 hp in a car made of plastic. how cool is that.

The stage 3 neon package is around 350hp, and it comes with a turbo upgrade over the stock 16g. I doubt you can get 500 from an sc on a 4 cylinder.

Reply to early post. Not just team up, the Cavalier and Ion are the same car.
Just different trim.
Saturn ain't Saturn like it used to be.
But reading this thread it seems they know what they are doing to get sales.
