The car manual for my saturn says only to use dex-cool antifreeze. I was wondering, as long as I flush the system, can I use some other type of coolant?

From what I understand it needs to be Phosphate free, Dex-cool is your best bet to be safe. I think Sierra is phosphate free also; however Dex-cool is also free of other chemicals such as silicates and it meets GM's coolant specs. Considering the price difference, I'd stick with the Dex-cool rather than risk a much more costly problem, but that is just me.

use dexcool. I switched to regular ethelyne glycol and first of all my gas mileage went way down from about 280 miles per tank to about 220 miles per tank. then during the summer the car would almost overheat and in the winter barely heat up at all. since I've switched back my gas mileage has gone up and the tempreature is very steady.
