short shifter vs regular

ok i took out my old shifter from my car last night, and i've set it next to my short shifter that i got off eBay. the actual lengths are the same, the only difference is that the ball on the short one is higher up than on the stock, so the lower section of the shifter is longer. is this how it should be, or do i get a crap shifter? i know short shifters are supposed to shorten the throw, but how exactally?

Thats how a short shifter should be. Since the bottom part is longer, the top moves less. IMO if you got no-name brand from ebay, its crap. How much did you pay? My quality Hurst was only $50

Get yourself some poly shifter bushings - $10 from summit racing

How does it work? Get 2 pens - lay them on something - put one on top of the other at a 90 degree angle. slide it so there is a 1/2" hanging off one side - now push down & watch how much the pen moves, not make the part hanging off longer & bam just like a short throw (well kinda) Its all about pivot points.

ricer mentality is that "short shifters" are shorter than the stock shifter.

Its all about the length under the pivot point. they are "short throw shifters" not just short shifter. it is true, however, that making the top of the shifter shorter will actually give you a slightly shorter throw, but this is only becuase you are moving closer to the fulcrum. this also has you putting a lot more effort into shifting which over time, leads to transmission failure.

aight so short throw shifters are longer under the pivot point? and how extreme could you go with that?
and why would an eBay one be crap? i got it for under 20 shipped
and i plan on going to Autozone to get some poly bushings, hopefully they have them b/c i want to get my car together (shifter and new tranny) this weekend

found a picture of B&M's page (www.bmracing.com) that explains well how a short throw shifter works
http://www.bmracing.com/products/shiftThrow.gif
they also have instructions on how to install one, i don't know why i took off the center console, guess i heard wrong...

technically, you can make it as short as you want. A friend of mine who has a del sol VTEC, he took his stock shifter, removed it from the car, cut it in half under the pivot point, and welded in a socket the same diameter as the shifter. his car shifts amazing. I love it.

It sounds ghetto, but it works and he bangs the shit out of the gears and it hasnt broken yet. with little to no effort, you flick your wrist and its in the next gear. its tight.

i had an ebay one and never had any problems out of it......but one thing i did have a problem with was the shift linkage.....there was a long round black piece sticking out and it put a hole in my exhaust....

adrian, was that result of the eBay shifter?

so if i were to take say my short throw i have no, and cut and weld an extension in under the pivot point, would it be even better? i'm just wondering if there is a point where the linkage is too low or something

Dont cut/weld your shifter, that a last resort. Buy a quality name brand shifter & no need to worry. Its only a frickin' shifter.

Stiffen the stabilizer making the shifter feel tighter & more responsive.

I cut mine off on my CRX also. I think that its some sort of balancer. I cannot tell a difference without it. It was in the way of my exhaust also.

Without seeing them, I would guess for the pivot bushing. No instructions?

brass bushings?
and i reccomend against autozone, go to a performance part store, most of what i've seen at autozone is cheep ricer stuff, stuff ricers would even be ashamed to put on their cars.
