Boyd's Paints?

Has anyone tried these paints? I saw them at Wal-Mart, and wal-mart didn't have any blue's in smaller ones that I could airbrush, so I bought one, and I was wondering if its a good paint. It was $5 so I'm guessing it is, but just wanted to see what people that have used it before thought of it. And any tips on useing it? Thanks for taking the time to read this, any help will be much appreciated.

It went on better than regular Testors spray cans. But was more tempermental than Tamiyas sprays. Its about in-between i would say.

I needed 2 cans on that land-yacht impala though.

Try some.

I've also bought a couple of these paints, but have been reluctant use them as i'm unsure which clear lacquer to use over them. Testors clear is hard to get hold of in the UK, so I was thinking of trying TAMIYA clear.

Has anyone tried this?

Boyds is really good paint, a lot better than regular testors. I almost always use it.

One tip would probably be to buy two of the cans, the bad thing about the paint is that it takes a good 2-3 coats to really cover a car, with testors one coat will really cover every thing up, im not sure if other people reading this thinks i make sence, but if you were with me when i paint, i would show you what i mean.

I only got one. Dang it. Does anyone think that I can cover my entire Revell Silverado with one can? This kind of blows. With one Tamyia, you can almost do about 3 cars, and the chassis. Thanks for all the help guys.

Im pretty sure you cant get the entire Silverado covered with one can, I might be wrong, i barely had any left over with a Revell Civic. so im not really sure. Good luck!

boyds goes on alright, it just takes a lot to cover like everyone's been saying :iceslolan so if you do a base coat of white or light blue it will help a lot good luck :biggrin:

Ok, thanks guys. Do you guys think a base coat of silver would look good? I have a ton of silver that I've never used, and I think a silver and blue would look pretty good. How would I do the base coat though. Do I just do it like You just paint normaly? a few light sprays, then a thick one, or would I do it someother way? Thanks for all your help guys. As long as your base coat is an even color you'll be good. I just use plain gray or black primer, depending how dark I want the color to look. Just make sure you have everything primed and if you have to sand off an area prime it again. Non-primed areas will show up through the paint unless you use an extra can or two. Non-primed cars I've used an entire bottle, and priming the car first I use only half the bottle.

I've used Polly S acrylic clear, Boyd's High Gloss clear enamel, and automotive 2-part clear over these paints with no problems.

Silver will be awesome and give it some depth, and if the Boyds doesn't completely cover it up it really won't be too noticable in fact it may just be a slightly lighter blue and the silver will help the pearl reflect.
Paint your base coat as you would any other, just make sure it goes down smooth, let it dry rela good and then go for the Blue.

I love these paints,they go on smooth and cover well.What i usually do is spray a little in an airbrush bottle and add a little testors thinner ,mix till it sprays smooth with an airbrush it really works well.

this is excellent advice IMO, and I think you will be more then happy with the results. I will do this a lot on models to get a better effect out of the paint I'm using as a top coat.

I think boyds paint is very nice paint, a little more difficult to get that perfect finish compared to tamiya so take some care. But the overall quality of the paint hue is superb the grape pearl and blue pearl are beautiful colors from experience.

if you'd like a reference pic, my blue silvia was done by applying 1 (2?) nice layer of boyds blue pearl over about 4 coats of testors dark blue. using this technique I got the darkness from the testors dark blue while still getting an interesting looking hue from the lighter pearl top coat.

Ok, thanks guys. Its too cold to paint anything. Its like 30 outside. I can't paint the body this week, so I made a duel exahust, and got the lift all done and ready for paint. I'll try and post some pics in the C&P forum soon.

Go ahead and paint, just bring the car inside right after you finish.

I still swear by it that i got my best paint job ever when it was 31 and there were snow flurries. so i think you can paint if you bring it inside right after you finish.

I'll have to try that sometime. Its too dark now. I'll paint it next week. I don't have time with school and stuff.
