Difference in engines???

Ok ppl I have a '88 Civic HB std. that has a d15b1 in it and I have a '91 Civic HB std. that has a d15b1 in it. I noticed on the '88 that the o2 sensor is right at the top where as my '91 isn't. What is the difference in the two engines? I was trying to get a clutch for it, but the part numbers are different for the years. Just about all the part # are different with these engine yrs.
For those about to say "DO A SWAP" I plan on doing one, but its not in the budget yet. So please spare me. I don't want to hear it. I just want to know the difference in the year engines and why the '88 is so different. HOLLA!

***(Just a little info) I got 2 new jobs. I will be working at Advance autoparts PT and I just got a new bartending job that starts in Nov. My swaps maybe sooner than I thought. I may not have to sell the b18b. Wish me luck.***

Well for power wise i believe its the same. I think the clutch have different splines for the 88 compared to the others.

I know that when I changed the transaxle in my 91 STD I had to buy a different clutch to go with the new transaxle. I was under the impression the that was because it was from a DX instead of a STD. I know the imput shaft on the transaxle is different from STD to DX & SI, but I don't think it has to do with the years. Your best bet is to count the splines on the imput shaft of the transaxle or if you have the clutch from bothe see if the disc's are interchangeable.

Ok so anyone know the number of splines it has 23 or 26? I need a new axle also. Will my best bet be to pull one off of a 88 civic?

so about the number of splines. Anyone know. I have a chance to get the clutch and axle new and for the low low.

the 88 trannies are 21 spline. The 89-91 are 20 spline.

all stds have 23 and all d seriese trannies have 26 for the trannie i had some bum at advance that the 23 spindels were on both sides and ended up selling me the wrong part and a week w/out a car and work.
just tell advance you have an std and they will give you the right axel, well technically tell them you have an std model civic they'de look at you funny if you told them you needed axels for your std.

the 88-89 STD had the HF/CX style manifold..so that alone would tell me it has less horsepower than the 90-91, since it had the DX/Si style 4-1 factory manifold.

use a 90-91 manifold on the 88 motor, because the 88 manifolds lower section is actually the cat converter, so if you use the 90-91 manifold, you will effectively have removed your cat, with no evidence it was ever there.
