2002 Windstar Brakes are garbage

hey guys,

I have a 2002 Windstar, and I find that the brakes are absolutely horrible. I'm aware that it's much harder to stop this vehicle seeing as it's heavier then most cars, but Ford sure as hell should have put proper size brakes on this "bus"...and they definitely should not have Drums in the rear with a vehicle this large.

Anyhow, my question is whether or not it's possible to replace the motorcraft brake pads in the front with some aftermarket pads which will make my braking power and ability much more efficient? I'm looking to make the brakes feel very solid, and consistent, unlike now whereas in the morning I have to pump the brakes before I use them...

any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, I'm driving a '96, and as it is heavy I don't know that I ever feel like I have outstanding braking/short stopping. I have however been happy with Raybestos Quiet Stop brake pads. I put new rotors on and the Quiet Stop pads and I have smooth effective braking. The pads are primarily ceramic, produce less dust and don't get quite as hot as semi-metallic which should mean less likely to warp the rotors. I have an coworker who made this change on his expedition and has been happy as well. The pads will run you nearly $75. They will however out last standard pads.

if you have to pump the brakes up to stop you van you might have something wrong. Have you tried to bleed them?. Also you may have a leaky master cylinder( does you pedal slowly drop to the floor when you are stopped at a light?) I have a '98 and changed the rotors/ calipers/ knuckles/ abs sensors to 2002 style and pedal feel is tons better.

I have a '96 with rear drum brakes.
I have done the brakes all the way around....and posted step by step pictures at http://community.webshots.com/album/201931518cScpNK

I used Brembo slotted rotors and Akabono ceramic pads. You can buy both at www.tirerack.com

For the rear drum brakes....I bought Bendix drums and Bendix organic lined shoes at Advance Auto Parts. I replaced all the hardware. I recommend replacing all the hardware on the rear drum brakes..... You can get the Motorcraft hardware kit from www.rockauto.com The hardware kit includes all the springs....including the springs for the self adjuster.

You may not need to replace the drums on your newer windstar. One of mine was out of round.....
