Hey Moppie,

where have you done your flying?
i guess it would have been Ardmore, right?
when was the last time you were up?

oh.. i forgot to mention something about massey in the other post..
you can do an instructors rating, as an option..
we are meant to do all the degree related flying in year 1 and 2, and in third year you can do either aviation manangement related papers, or the instructor course.
I did management :-(
I may do an instrutor rating elsewhere if I decide I want/ need to get one, after graduation..

Yes.

I walked past one on a yard yesterday for $16999NZ.

If you are prepared to take the risk of importing one from Japan yourself, you could probably get an average one for between $6-10k.

Yeah it was at admore, and I was last up about 4yrs ago so to get back into it would almost require starting again.
I thought about doing the massy avaition degree, but i dont really see myself as profesional pilot, or getting involved in the industry. Its like cars, I see it purly as a recreational activity, just one that I currently can't afford. But I am very tempted to add a Two week PPL course onto my currently rather small student loan. :D

I believe the laws over here are quite strict, and I think compliance is a problem :(

The RX 7 is no longer sold in Au (I think) so it could meet low volume compliance in theory. I practice, with all of the new laws coming in, forget it. :(

Shame we don't assemble cars here any more. The massive influx of imported 2nd hand ex Japan ,and changes to the tarriff laws on new imports killed every car plant in New Zealand.

Did you know that out of its entire global operation, including partnerships, only one Honda factory has ever closed down?

Guess where?

It was Nelson, New Zealand.

The plant was orginaly opened in the early or mid 60s by Triumph and used to build Triumph Heralds and MK1 and Mk2 2000/2500TC's.
The last Triumph 2500S ever made in the world rolled off the line at the start of 1981, and the plant was then handed over to Honda as part of thier multi million dollor investment in the remains of British Leyland.
It was then used to produce Various Honda's untill its clossur in the late 90's.
Honda still own it, and there is talk of using it to clean up imported Hondas from Japan and sell them through dealer ships the same as Toyota are doing with the Thames plant and signiture range.

I have no idea what the current plant looks like, but during the time it was owned by Triumph it was known as the Woolshed, as an Old woolshed that stood on the land was incorperated into the orginal building.

My sadly departed '73 Triumph 2500TC was built there, and rolled off the production line in about November of 1973 to be sent to Auckland for sale.
And my Mothers Current car, and 97 Honda Accord was rolled off the production line there in January of 1997.

Why, with the emilination of tariffs we get far cheaper new cars.

What difference does it make where the car was assembled, sure a few car plants in NZ closed down but those jobs have been recovered and more in other parts of the economy.

(This is the economist part of me thinking not the car enthusiast - not that ive ever been enthusiastic about NZ assembled Japanese family saloons like most of them were)

I disagree.........I can't quote exact figures but to my way of thinking many people lost skilled work as a result of the closures. Those skills were unique to the industry, and the displaced staff would have either abandoned their trade,or abandoned their country. The tools of the industry were shipped to so-called 'third world'nations who are setting up their own heavy industry...pretty soon NZ could become a crop based economy. We need to preserve and strengthen our industrial base or we will at some stage be held hostage by another nations superior technology. The recovered jobs that you claim are mainly in the agriculturalservices industries.Farming is at the height of its boom/bust cycle....when it falls, these jobs tend to disappear.

The increase in vehicle imports has skewed our trade figures, and less of the ticket price for the car remains in NZ.The only winners are those who trade in cars...sure they cost you less, but as a direct result, you will get much less for it should you decide to sell later.

Moppie

Dejox when the car plants closed so did all the surport industrys.
The sewing factoryts that supplied the seat trims, the rubber factory that made the door seals, the company that made the wiring looms etc.
Its all gone.
None of it was made in enough volume to make export viable, and there is no other need in NZ for machinery and skills.

Cheap cars are not nessacrly a good thing.
Look at how many young inexperiance drivers kill themselfs and others each year because thier first car was a GSR lancer or VTEC Civic.
And look at some of the crap on our roads, you dont see much of it in the south Island, but Auckland is swarming with lots of poorly maintained poor quality imports that are well passed thier use by date.

Cars like that depreciate really quickly so yes far to young people drive around in cars that are far to fast for them. A common stepping stone into fast imports is the GTX Mazda which you can get cheap ones for around 5 grand.

Next step is the GSR Lancer starting at about 10 grand.

An STi is still too expensive for most teenagers but yes there are alot of WRX's driven by very young ppl.

Down here teenagers have no money but dont bat an eyelid at taking out huge loans and paying off alot more than the car was ever worth. Everyone seems really surprised when tehy hear that I payed cash for my car and that my parents didnt help me, its just not done.

BTW the prices I mentioned above would be lower still if you lived further north

So it is trye. All the turbo JDM beasties that you guys get are at a rediculously low price! 180SXs, Silvias, Skylines, RX7s, 300ZXs etc? How much does delictable machinary like that retail for in NZ? What are the associated costs like for owning a car in NZ? Eg insurance, registration, petrol etc.

180sx and Silvias for like early 90s ones around 8 grand, skylines for a GTS maybe as little as around 5-6 grand, RX7 new shape anywhere from about 16 grand going up to 30ish, 300ZX less than 10 dont know why they are so cheap but they are practically worthless considering how much they were new.

Insurance I pay $600 a year for full cover on $9000 for my Del Sol, Im 18 with 60% no claims bonus.
Registration is $205 a year but its gonna go up slightly in April when new ZCC charges come in
Petrol for 96 octane is around $1 a litre

OK here we go. THINGS I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE AUSTRALIAN AUTOMOTIVE SCENE.

Skyline GT-R R34s be allowed back into touring car racing. THe public realise all the shit Holden and to a lesser extent have been feeding them for years and both marques go broke. The Australian governent then realizes it is soon going to be screwed and eliminates the need for import compliancing, meaning they come here and we drive 'em off the boats. Then we start cutting unneccesary parts of the budget, like politicians superannuation payments and giving it all to Arab Oil sheiks and make 98 and 100 octance petrol less than 30c/litre. Then we completely deregulatw the RTA and have state run insurance for $10 a year.

muhahahahahaha:devil: :bloated:
