Finally finished mpfi swap!!!!

Well i swapped it into my '91 STD.
It wasnt too hard to do, all the wiring and hoses and stuff was pretty straight forward.
There is definetly more power, but not as much as I was expecting.
I think my problem now might be my 4 speed, i gotta swap it out sometime.
First gear pulls way harder, then 2nd drops off a little bit, then third, but I guess that is what it did stock anyway.
Mpfi sure looks a lot better and sounds a lot better than stock.
So future mods to go faster are:
5 speed
Si cam
header, high flow cat, 2.5 inch piping or somewhere around there.
I already have an intake so all that other stuff should make the civic pretty peppy.
I'm going to the track probably wednesday, I got 18.4 stock, and I was hoping to get into the 16s, but I'm not sure anymore.
The only problem I have now is that the speedometer isnt working, anybody know what this could be from?

Now i have a code 9 which is no. 1 cylinder position sensor.
It wasnt there when i drove the car last time and i havent done anyting.
It runs fine and seems the same as before.
Maybe its just a loose wire or something.

So what process did you take to complete it I'm just curious. I might do it for the hell of it before I get my B16A.

#9 is the cylinder position sensor, its inside your distributor, supposing you made sure to put on an Si distributor. If you didn't than that is why you are throwing a code.

What do you mean what process? Im happy to answer any questions about it since it is fresh in my mind. I want to do a swap someday, but until then this was a good way to learn a couple things about my car.
I got my code 9 to go away.
I just checked the wires and they must have been to close or soemthign.
THere was no metal to metal contact, but when I moved them it went away.
My speedometer hasnt worked since i did this, and after like 20 minutes the vehicle speed sensor, code 17 came on, which makes sense.
I guess i will search around and see what that is about.

Well i think my speedometer problem is that somewhere along the way during the swap i unplugged it by accident, at least i hope so because that woudl explain why it doesnt work.
THere is a raised edge on the cable so does it only fit in one way?
And how do i find that one way because ive put it in many ways and it hasnt started to work.

91 std civic.....d15. might i suggest a zc/si hybrid tranny. thats what im running in mine. really close 2-5 gearing. highway rpm 3750@75mph. consistes of si tranny mainshaft and counter shaft with zc 3-5 gears. and the si final drive. knocked off a whole 3 tenths off my 1/4 time.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I will probably start looking at trannys next spring, right now I'm in school so I cant get much done.
I got the speedometer cable back in and it worked, everything is working fine, mpfi was a success.

You are soo lucky your MPFi swap was a success.
I still havent got it running right.
Read my most current post and you will see why.
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/t132382.html
If its not too much of a bother could you or anyone else look at your MPFi intake manifold and tell me if you have a Fast Idle control Solenoid Valve, its on the back of the manifold.
I think thats the reason my car limits the rev at 3000 and has slow throttle response. My intake manifold doesnt have this.
Here is a pic of the SI Manifold Diagram:

You will see a pic of what it looks like.
Thanks Alot.

Ya i was reading your post.
I do have that on the back of my manifold, it looks just like the thing in the picture.
Are you getting a vacuum leak because it is not there or is it just idling high?
Actually, have you let your car warm up all the way and seen if the idle has fallen down?
When it is cold it idles up around 2 like yours, then falls back down to normal.
It takes more time to do so than before teh swap.
I think it might be because my fast idle thing isnt hooked up, I dont know if it is supposed to be but if it is I'm just not seeing the wires that go to it.
I think I read somewhere that this has something to do with the idle when the car is cold, ill search a little bit.

Ok, i just read your post somemore.
The vacuum leak is what is making it idle high.
I had that same problem, my IAT was missing and I didnt even realize it.
If you plug those holes up with something or get the thing that goes there you should be all set.
Do you still have the 3,000 redline?
I had this, and it is because you need to use sheiled wires from C1 and C2 to the distributor.
I also had this problem and as soon as i put shielded wires in it went away.

Hi,
Ok thanks for the help.
what exactly to you mean by sheilded wires?
Yea I still have the 3000 RPM redline.
Right now I have a piece of metal with 2 10mm bolts holding it in place. But if you look at the diagram it shows that the Fast idle Solenoid has a hose that goes to it?
Yea when I put that piece of metal over it dropped from a 2000 RPM idle to a 900-1000 RPM idle.
I had to have wired it correctly though, right?
beacuse it wouldnt run if it was wired incorrectly.
I probably just need those shielded wires to the dizzy?
Do you think this is also causing my slow throttle response?
Thanks

If you plug up the holes you should be alright to drive it around.
I dont have mine hooked up right now.
Did you have wires to hook it up with and where are they?
I think mine must have fallen where I cant see them because they must be there.
I think that is what is giving me a high idle right now.
I got the shielded wires from radio shack, i dont know why they help but i read online that they did and it worked.
I got two wires for $3.99 that had a headphone jack on one end, and aligator clips on the other.
I just cut the two ends off, and wired it to the distributor.
What do you have an STD or a dx and any mods?
Also, have you been to the track before and are you gonna go after the swap?

No I dont have any wires to it. I guess the guy i got the manifold from musta took the idle solenoid.
I have some RCA cables from my last AMP installation.
Could I just take the RCA cable and pull it apart then solder it from Dizzy to C1 and C2?
I have a 90 Civic LX.
My mods are a short ram intake and Gt Spec muffler.
I plan on doing a little bit more latter.
Thanks

I dont know if rca cables would work but its worth a shot.
So do you know where the idle solenoid hooks up too?

Yea, I may give it a shot.
But in all the MPFI swap articles I have read it never says to use sheilded wires.
Yes, I still have the 3000 RPM redline.
I think the idle solenoid hooks up to the one hose that is not plugged up.
Its hard to describe if you look at the SI hose diagram you will see where it hooks to. http://www.binghamtonlife.com/manual/2gsm/images/91-11-17.jpg
My car drives but it has really slow throttle response and will only rev to 3000 RPM.
The car also makes a high pitched squeal when you push on the gas.
I double checked again the injector plug wires and they are all soldered in the right places.
I am thinking it may be the Dizzy wiring.
Yes, I am also planning on taking it to the track when it actually gets finished.
Thanks

Sweet im curious on what time you will get, im going friday.
That high pitched sound is the vacuum leak.
I read all the how tos also and they never said anything about shieled wires.
I went to honda-tech.com and searched and people had the same problem and they said that was what the problem was.
Plus my car was doing the smame thing as yours, i put in shielded wires and it solved the problem.
Do you have a base 1/4 time with your car stock?

I'm pretty sure taht the idle solenoid hooks up to the vacuum line labled 12, its either the one thats marked 12 or 21.

You say yours isnt hooked up?
Does your car have the same throttle response as B4 the swap?
My car has a lot slower throttle response and still wont go over 3000 RPM. Also the car is alot louder, it idles nice but is way to loud.
Thanks
P.S. If you have a AOL Screename it would be cool.
