Glad to hear you're probably getting a check for it. Just think of it this way. You're one of few that picks up two new cars within two months (to my knowledge at least). Glad to see things are turning out for you.

*cough*2.5RS*cough*

I got 2 new cars in 8 months, does that count any?

You got another one after the forester?? Or was the Focus that new? You need to keep me updated on these things, Ray. :shakehead

Edit: If the total damage had been seen on my truck at the estimate before the work started, I would've ended up with a newer car within 2 months. Didn't work that way. I just had to wait 3 weeks to get it back once work began. :eek7:

From what the arresting officer told me today, they have 3 or 4 suspects in custody, all around 19 years old (means they'll be tried as adults), and they're seeking one more suspect...

The officer was also able to tell me exactly how they stole my car. Very scary. They probably had it done in less than 3 minutes, and my alarm probably never went off...

:dunno: Is it wise to post how to steal a car on the internet? :dunno:

Maybe, if it helps someone protect their car, but I'd not want anyone using it to commit a crime, then say they learned it from me...

So if you don't want to tell us how they stole it, can you at least tell us how to protect our cars from this method of thieving?

Jay!
08-24-2003, 09:52 PM
So if you don't want to tell us how they stole it, can you at least tell us how to protect our cars from this method of thieving?Buy an alarm set-up that kills the engine even if it's defeated. I mean, if that's even possible. An alarm system that has to be "alive" but deactivated for the motor to run.

Basically, they were able to gain access under my hood w/out the alarm going off; unplug the battery; deactivate the alarm; and reattach the battery which gave them a completely functional system w/ no alarm attached. How do you guard against that? :shakehead

Also, sharpen the tops of your window glass. :uhoh:

2strokebloke
08-24-2003, 10:19 PM
So wait, did they get into your car to open the hood? Or did they snap the hood release cable and go from there?

Weird. But basically you're saying that this could all have been solved by say - disconecting the condesnor from the distributor (for pre electronic ignition cars) or perhaps by instaling a valve after the fuel pump, that when switched "off" sends fuel back to the tank, rather than to the carburetor. The car would run for a minute or two, and then just stall, making them look like morons. Or the easiest and smartest of all, install a switch under the dash, or in the glovebox which can be used to complete the circuit to the starter motor, with it switched off, the circuit is broken and the motor won't even crank over. I think I'll do that last one with my Yugo just for fun. Unless they know where you've hidden the switch, they won't be able to crank the engine. (and the lead I'm talking about is the thin wire from the ignition switch, not the thick one from the battery. Simple solutions to a stupid problem.

So wait, did they get into your car to open the hood? Or did they snap the hood release cable and go from there? Not sure, exactly, but they got the hood open first.

And yeah... I've thought of a thousand places to hide the secret cut-off switch since Monday. :(

2strokebloke
08-24-2003, 10:31 PM
I don't know anything about Hondas, but if they use an electric fuel pump, you could always put a switch for that too - and this'd give them the same stalling out after several seconds surprise.

Sorry to hear that man. Civics seem to be the most popular cars in that section of crime. So that means that they are the easiest to break into.

I have no idea how those people actually learn to break in to the car, and even with such security they still manage to get in.

You've never been to Manchester in England then!

Diesel2NR
08-25-2003, 12:09 PM
You all are giving me a lot of security ideas that are low cost. Hell, if you wanted to, you could put a switch to the starter in one area, then across the car, a switch to the fuel pump. I like the idea of a fuel line valve that would return the gas to the tank, but it sounds complicated and I'd probably blow myself and my truck up. I like the idea of the switches. It wouldn't be hard because you could hook it up to one of the wires coming off your fuse box.

Jay, I'd personally like to know exactly how they popped the hood without even getting in the car. :eek7: It puzzles me. Any idea on how long it'll be until they write you a check to go get your new car?

On 6th generation Civics, it's not too hard to open the hood without getting into the car. I've got a 96 Civic, and a trusted person I know demostrated how to break into my car. Was surprisingly simple, and didn't take long. Not much you can really do about it. Alarms, the club, that brake thing, it's all bypassed by those car thieves. It's just the ugly side of society that we have to deal with.

Hopefully you get a nice fat check from the insurance company.

Jay, sorry about the Civic bro! Theives are indeed the scum of the earth! They can burn in hell for all I care :angryfire :newburn:  and I should care more! I'm a Christian! Anyway, since I joined the USAF, I've been robbed twice! MY Blazer brand new $1500 Alpine stereo, purchased at Circuit City in Michigan last November was stolen on New Years' Eve 2002. I was in basic training and my mother who was supposed to put storage insurance on my truck decidied to wait a few weeks. In the mean time, she cancels my comprehensive. During my no insurance week, BAM! Passenger side front window shattered, Alpine CDA-7893 ripped out of dash, pair of R-12 subwoofers and MTX Thunder amp ripped out of cargo area. ALL GONE! MY neighborhood is full of local cops, in fact, my next door neighbor is a cop and she works the night shift. According to my Dad, her cop car was in her driveway when the stuff got pilfered. Next was my digital camera, which fell subject to pilferage while I was in tech school on Keesler AFB, MS. I know the feeling of being robbed :frown: :banghead: :crying:   :shakehead  and it truly sucks. May the theives of the world be struck by lightning.

Nope, I'm not an MP. I was considering law enforcment but was too smart. That's what the Air Force said, not me by the way. I'm a computer operator. Bah-humbug. BTW, the Air Force has "Security Police" instead of military police. Why? Because we're "different" from the other branches.

Here's an idea :thinkerg:! Remove the starter right when you park your car, nevermind scratch that one, you should totally remove the engine all together!

Anyways, jokes aside the 1989 Toyota Camry has been on the top of the stolen list for several years now. Scary thing is, we own a 1991 model...

Two ironic things, though...

When I was depositing the insurance check, the teller at my credit union looked at my accounts and say the loan on the Civic and said, "Hey, yuo have a Civic Si? I just bought one!" I said, "Well, I had one... Make sure you lock yours up well..."

The day after I bought it, I had breakfast with THE4TH (from whom I bought the Civic) in San Diego, so he was one of the very first to see the replacement for his own ex-car.

Heh. :sunglasse
