Came into my head when i saw the SRT-4 go against the Evo 8. Why does the SRT-4 cost so cheap. nearly 8g less than the Evo 8. the SRT-4 is rated at 240 hp and like 2?? Torque. thats alot of HP on a car like that. and its rated at 28?? pds. i think it jus has a "non-reliable" engine again.

You can think what you want. But the 2.4L and the 2.0L Neon engines have proven themselves to be quite reliable.
Has it ever occured to you that the other companies are just over-charging?

Also, the Neon doesn't have AWD. It also probably doesn't have the stock suspension technologies that the Evo 8 and STi have. Also, those special interiors the Evo 8 and STi have, probably don't help costs much.

Next time you go to the ricer shop look at the mechanics cars at dodge, most will not have a mopar products. This is for you doubters.
I will admit that Chrysler did have a few minor quality issues in the early and mid 90s that was for a very short period and it really only pertained to few transmissions. The only problem that the Neons ever had were head gaskets which was a quick cheap fix. Let me remind you that Chrysler knows what they are doing when it comes to turbocharging and the SRT-4 isn't any different. If you can take a look at last months issue of Sport Compact Car they got a chance to take apart the SRT-4's 2.4L engine and take a look. What they found was an overly built engine that could take a severe beating. Most manufactures develop engines that are as durable as they HAVE to be to save money. In the SRT-4's case they are much more durable then they need to be. Sport Compact Car said they were very impressed with the entire engine setup. There are people running over 1,000 HP on the stock block and crank. There are SRT-4s that are running in the 9s and 8s. Chrysler does not have any quality issues. If you think that they do then you are just plain being ignorant.

Chrysler does not have any quality issues. If you think that they do then you are just plain being ignorant. Talk to a mechanic not some import mag, they never work on these cars. GM had a strong 4 banger engine called the IRON DUKE took my buddy 2 pounds of sand and 1000 miles to kill it. I do give the fact you can build up the turbo dodge but for 95% of the people that buy em they dont do any mods. But hey I guess if you like em go for it, No car or Mopar? 1. You've probably seen more than one and didn't know it.
2. I don't care about what a mechanic thinks. I don't know how the people that own that car take car of it. All I know is that my family has never had problems with our Chryslers that weren't driver caused. My LeBaron GTC was one of the turbo cars. It had 152,000 on it and still ran like the day we bought it. It would have gone longer had it not been hit by another car. Also you don't have to mod the turbo cars to make them go fast, they were fast stock. Also for very little money you could have your car in the 12s. As for your comment about a Chevy engine, I have one that shows you that every auto manufacture makes shit including Chevy. I owned an AMC Jeep Wagoneer. It had a Chevy 2.8L V6, the electronics were done by Ford, and the transmission, transfer case, and gear boxes were made by Chrysler. Now this Jeep had some strange problems I bought it with 172,000 miles and the engine had a full rebuild at 100,000. Early on the starter died. The windows also wouldn't roll down sometimes, but if I held the switch down and revved up the engine they would. Also the brightness of my headlights depended upon how high the engine was revving. The big problem was that at 188,000 the rod bearings went meaning the engine needed to be rebuilt, again! The first only made it 100,000 and the second only made it 88,000. At about that same time the power steering pump exploded. After doing some looking I found that a lot of people have said this is one of the top ten worst engines ever built. It was gutless and wasn't reliable at all.
So you need to learn that everybody make shit. Sport Compact Car took the damn engine apart with a lot of pictures and specs. It was a four or five page article. Also they aren’t an import mag, they cater to all Sport Compacts import and domestic. Perhaps you should read the magazine before bashing it.
Also, yes Chrysler is my favorite manufacture but I like plenty of other manufactures as well.

Chevy V6's do not suck. Naturally I'm going to defend my 4.3l V6.
The mileage I'm posting is all from V6 engines used in the S-10.
AntiRice:
03 with 562 miles, and a 94 with 202,600
John Hammer:
I have an offer on the line for an 84 s-10 for $2300 with 150,000Selling 84 S-10
Cobra1:
176,000 on my 95 4.3 CPI
(SiC)(sIc)6:
995 Sonoma w/ 170,000 miles. STILL RUNNIN STRONG!
dknutt:
My 94' has 122,000
My '95 4.3 has 159k. Still strong.
BadasS10:
My friends 94' has 208,000 miles

Got a 94 with 251,000 rebuilt at 249,000
LaynLo17:
my 97 s-10 is up to 56k now
the 90 blazer got 230K
Come on, if all Chevy V6's = suck, how could so many people have over 100-200,000 miles on these engines? It's not like thats all of them either I could post more if I have to.

To This Novadk Guy. I Work For A Chrysler Dealer, And I Drive A 98 Neon That Of Course Had The Head Problem. Other Than That No Problems, I'm Getting Up On 93 K And Haven't Even Had A Bulb Go Out. As For The Srt 4, I Think It's Going To Be A Great Car. The Techs I Work With Mostly Drive Dodge, Then Chevy Then Ford. No I Haven't Done Any Mods To My Car, But I'm Driving A Sohc And It Takes A Beating Coming Up The Highway. My First Car Was A 78 Z28, Loved That Car Thought I Would Always Be A Chevy Chick, I Got In A Bad Way A Couple Of Years Ago And My Dad Gave Me A 87 Cavalier With 253 K And I Drove It For A Year, Bought The Neon And Think It's Great. Yeah One Of The Pushes For The Neon Is Getting It Worked On By People I Work With, But Now I'm Thinking About Buying The Srt 4, But That;s Because Of It's Performance. The Reason It's Price Tag Is Low Is Because Chrysler's Stock Isn't Selling For 8 Bucks A Share Like Ford Or About 30 For G.m.. Right Now Chrysler Has The Best Warranty When It Comes To Domestic..

Heh. No. The 2.4L turbo is for all intents and purposes the 2.0L Neon engine with a one-inch higher deck height and numerous enhancements for turbocharging. It's a motor designed completely by Chrysler (pre-merger), developed for turbocharging by Chrysler of Mexico, and improved again by Chrysler USA for the US market. :)

I have to get in on this one. I have a 2000 Neon and it rocks!!!!! 76,000 miles on it and it hasn't had one single problem ever. And I rod the shit out of it. Tough car. PERIOD! The reason most people have so many problems with their cars is they forget to change their oil or even check under the hood. Maintenance is a must have. :loser: Secondly the reason all the hype is over imports is because they make so many easy to get mods for them. Look in any catalog and you'll see everything for the import crap! Few manufacturers make anything for a Neon. It's hard to modify a domestic. But thank God that the Neon is one of the exceptions because they are the only most popular domestic models that companies make performance parts for. It is truly the exceptional that can make a high performance Neon. Any nerd with cash can build up a Civic. Give me a bone stock Neon and a bone stock Rice Grinder and lets see the Dyno. Nuff said!!! :sunglasse

Or maybe you're just not reading enough.
Page 1, 46% of threads are about a problem, page 2, 50% exactly, page 3 46% again (yes I counted). Keep in mind I'm only going by the thread title, so I may be counting some I shouldn't, but I also may not be counting some I should, so I think it's pretty fair. :sunglasse
You got that straight! I have a friend that bought a PT Cruiser, its almost 4 years old with 50,000 miles and the car has had no problems whatsoever, and I remember reading in forums people saying it would not last. I'm so sick of people's preconception about a car just because its made in the US.
Its time to face the truth, the quality gap between import and Domestic is closing at a staggering pace. :iceslolan

Wow, there's some hard driving. A whopping 12,500 miles a year. Why, that's almost AVERAGE! I'm amazed the poor thing starts!
Seriously, Chrystler has quality issues. It's been proven in the garage. It's been proven on these forums (those percentages by ldelaysionl are pretty hard to argue with, unless you're really ignorant). It's proven by the fact that they offer such a huge warranty. Ever notice who offers the wonderful warrantees? The car companies with quality issues! Wow! Look at Hyundai...why do you think they warrantee their cars so long? History, maybe?
If you want to drive a Chrystler, go ahead. But don't claim they're reliable any quicker than I'll claim my Hyundai Accent can outrun your SRT-4. Everyone knows better.

I agree with that! More often than not I read, 1st person: "I've had my car for like three years and all of the sudden it's running like $#!t. What's wrong with this POS?"
A: "Umm, when was the last time you did basic maintenance to it? Change the plugs, wires, check the tires, change the oil?"
1st person: "I don't know. How often are you supposed to do it?"
A: "sigh... go read your manual, please."

He's definetly looking to buy! And who could blame him. A Neon is a very nifty car. What with the slick neon body the way it curves and seems to beckon one to drive, supple and seductive like an angel and the way that engine purrs. Slam! that baby into low and go like hell!!! :evillol: An evil volotile, hemoraging barely containable explosion of force and exhaust!!! Suprise!!! Ultimate sleeper biatch! Hey!! Do I think they're cool cars? Yeah, the ACRs, RTs, and SRT4s anyways...
Do I think they have quality issues? I know I see Neons driving around all the time with half the body covered in rust. It's not like I live in Minnesota or anything either. They're the only car made in the 90's or later I regularly see with that much rust.

Hey notice this about the Subaru Impreza site. Most of the cars, well almost all of them are 2000 and up models. Hmmm! Now notice this site all the Neons with problems are 2000 and below almost none of the 2000 Neons and up have any problems. I think you should research your facts a little deeper. Any old car is bound to have problems and issues. When did the Impreza first come out anyways? :nono:

In defense of neons (heheh) their owners do have a tendancy to keep their cars longer than impreza owners....and the ones that keep their cars longer are probably doing it because they can't afford something newer, and are therefore going to be the do-it-yourselfers. I dunno...maybe there was a point to be had there. I just know that it's pretty well known that Chryslers are crap. But I wouldn't say no if someone handed me the keys to an SRT-4.
And kudos to Dodge for making it reliable. Now just slap that 70k mile warantee on it and I might trade my Accent in.

Neither would I, they're cool cars. I've already said that, but some people in here are so defensive they apparantly didn't read that, and instead just decided to make some stuff up to try and counterpoint with.
I would also like to point out that the only 2 threads added since the overheating ones I mentioned are a water leak and a fan problem

If someone handed me the keys to the SRT 4 right now. I'd sure as hell take it. Then turn around and sell it. I'd use the money to bring up my current 2000 Neon. Why? It is too easy to just go out and buy a fast car and smoke people at the light knowing all that you did was buy one. I'd rather customize, customize, customize so that my heart, sweat and blood is inside and out of the car. In that way it will feel more like a part of myself. Anyone who has put time in with the wrench will know exactly what I'm talking about. I make more than enough right now that I can just trade in my 2K for the SRT 4 but I want to see what kind of tricky shit I can do to it first. In one year I'll smoke the SRT 4 cuz it only has 215 horse (right?). 0-60 in I believe 5.8 that is fast but I can make mine much faster. I have huge plans!$$$$$ In reply to all you foreign car owners. GO FOR YOUR OWN! I've got respect enough to say they CAN be fast and reliable. So can the Dodge I'm living proof I've not one single problem with mine and I take good care of it. Just cuz they make the rice mobiles dummy proof doesn't prove shit! Honestly! It is all about the competition on the street and don't say that you can't be left in the dust by a Neon that is just plain ignorance. I know a guy here in my hometown that puts 500 horses to the ground in a 99 Neon. That would be like saying that nothing can beat the SRT 4. Sure there is. My dad's car is over 30 years old and can smoke almost anything on the street including the SRT. Nuff Said! :evillol: Defensive you say. Hell yeah yer on my turf ricer! This site is for Neon enthusiasts and American pride!! That is right American and that is the biggest reason why I bought a Neon cuz it is Dodge. What am I to do when someone knocks my favorite car? Just bend over and smile? Right! I'll just go to your site and start throwin smack! Then well see who is defensive. :lol2: And by the way that white thing you got there, you know that picture of that THING. It might be fast and I stress might be. Se, I'm not like you. I'm not a defensive little ricer who gets pissed off just because someone doesn't like my car. I like it, and that's all that matters to me.
I know last time I was driving my car, a girl pulled up next to me, said "I love your car, can I have your phone number?" and the guy riding with her says "She wants to fvck you". A week ago I pulled up to a gas station and the girl working the cash register says "That car is nice" and a guy walks out of the back room, looks at it, and says "That's more than nice, that's awesome!". A couple weeks ago a van full of highschool age looking girls pulls up next to me on the passenger side, the driver yells "Nice car!" then about 4 of the girls in the back flash me.
So obviously I'm not the only one who likes it. How often does that stuff happen to you in your Neon?

haha, you made this post in that thread:
That SRT-4 can rape the STI, WRX, the RSX and even the 350Z on the 1/4 mile, outrageous performance for some American econo car.
Uhh... the STi is about a full second faster than the SRT4 in the 1/4, and the WRX and 350Z are even and it'll come down to the driver.
I would think that some day you'll realize you look like an absolute tool with all the misinformation you try to pass off as fact, but no, it just keeps coming.

It's a toss up as far as the 350z, but a wrx is easy to take for a stock srt-4.
Even a modded wrx can be beaten from both a stop and a roll. I raced a wrx from a stop when I was stock and took him by almost a car. Also not too long ago I raced a modded wrx from a 40 mph roll and ate him up by 4 car lengths. I'd love to find an sti on the freeway, but haven't been fortunate enough. From a roll an sti can be beaten. Not by much, but it's very possible. From a light, no chance for me, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't try

Alright Idelaysionl here it is and here I intend to squash this thing between you and I cuz in all respect and B.S. aside you and I are the same. We love cars! Nuff Said!!
1. I suppose I could modify an SRT-4 but the parts are already top of the line stock! Not much to modify. Also I haven't a chance to see under the hood of one. Besides it'll be a while before any real good mods come out for it. Still gonna see how tricked out I can get my 2000 though. I can see the image in my head.
2. WTF! Pintos compared to a Neon cum on get real bro! I guess I'm just lucky to get a well put together car. Jose must have been in a good mood at the plant that day. 95-99 have had their problems but the next gen very few if any so admit it if you truly are an enthusuast that Dodge did make a better car after Y2K. And with the fast growing interest in the import/domestic race scene thanks to the Fast and Furious fad I think Dodge will want to kick some ass. Maybe just so they can be in the next movie. LOL!
3. I just got from you that you had no respect for Neons the way you just trash on them and say they rust and break down. Sounds pretty negative to me. :cwm27:
4. Here's my favorite part. I lied about the 500 horses, well actually he did he's kinda modest. I just talked to the guy who helped him build it, he works for me. Acura-Insanity LTD. Here in my homestate. He said he put a, get this bro flipped my lid, GM 572 performance engine in it and that he put it on his dyno and it pulled 712 HP at 736 lbs torque. OMG!!!! :eek7: He said he'd bring the dyno tomorrow. 712! Dang! I hope that's true. :lol2:
5. Yes people do comment on my Neon and it's only stock. I wax it once a month. Wash it every week. Shaved my emblems and took off the chrome grill, makes it look more aggressive. Mostly though I get compliments on my JVC SX990, 1200w Power Acoustik amp, Chrome/Digital 1.5 Capacitor and my two Warren G Series 800w 10" subs. They create that warm romantic glow with my blacklight in the back. I get looks and smiles all the time. No titties flashed at me though but that'll come with a body kit and a paint job.
Okay that is the last of it. Anyways goodluck with your car and it doesn't really look that bad I was just messin G! :sunglasse

SRT-4 are cheap because dodge took a cheap car (the neon) and added a turbo, some suspension and a tranny. Don't get me wrong, it is a an excellent car for the price.

the srt is also cheap because it is assembled in a factory in Mexico they save on labor there. Also they are made from cheap foreign car parts! Ha! I don't know if that last one is true. Shot out to my homey Idelaysionl!! Sup! :cwm27: :loser:

As far as modifying the car, there are a lot of parts out for it right now and it's been out less than a year. There are a couple different turbo back and cat back exhausts, new intercoolers, intakes, a couple different turbo kits coming out very soon. Also, wings west has a wide body kit out for it. Crane cams has a set of cams and cam gears. There are people that are pushing close to 300 hp at the wheels without changing the turbo yet. Then the people who have changed the turbo are getting well over 300 and one guy has over 400 at the wheels. This is all in the first year. Just wait a little while longer.

god whats all this fighting for.... the evo and sti will need engine overhauls at 100k too if they are driven like they are marketed to be driven, i understand how engines work and everything is far more stressed under boost...thats why turbos blow headgaskets and need new lifters and valve seats and compression rings and such more often...duh, its an engine running alot of boost. fact is, the srt-4 isnt the car the sti and evo are, they are just better built with more happy features. but if you want something cheap and fast the neon is an awesome alternative. i personally would save the bucks and get an sti, or just buy an older 911 or 944 turbo and have a blast with that, but thats me, i like european cars. oh yea, and as far as turbocharging cars: saab is the all-time champion of fast, reliable, and innovative 4 cylinder turbos, not dodge, and its awefully hard to argue against that.

You are absolutely right about the car itself isn't an sti or an evo. One thing I can tell you is that the engine is built much better. The Mopar sponsored Shaun Carlson drag car is using both the stock block and crank and is pushing over 900 hp to the wheels and 44psi. You try that with either of the sti or evo engines and see what happens.
The thing people try to do is compare 2 totally different classes of cars. The srt is a straight line car, although neons have always done well in auto-x and the srt does it as well. The sti and evo were made to run the twisties although they do well in the 1/4 that's not there purpose. One thing I can say is that this is the funnest and fastest car for 20k. It's priceless to see the look on some guy driving a camaro or mustang when you smoke him.

I got to say that I'm impressed that someone with a hybrid Accord also owns an SRT-4. The Honda people I know, that build-up frankenCivics and the like would never condescend to own an American car.
As far as the SRT-4 not being great in the twisties... maybe not with a stock SRT-4 suspension, but with a stock ACR suspension they are almost untouchable. Check out the SRT-4's 8th place overall at One Lap of America.

Impressive.
Oh, and for the record, the SRT-4 is built in Belvidere, Ill, not Toluca, MX.

To tell you the truth, before I bought my srt, I test drove a wrx (too much lag), a spec v (just a crappy car) and a gti (weighs too much and wasn't very impressive). I don't really care what the car is, as long as it performs. I did my research on it and this engine is bullet proof compared to other high performance 4 cylinder engines.
The stage 3 coilovers from mopar are what people are using for auto-x and they do very well. They are made for the srt. They aren't cheap at close to 1,400.00, but are very effective. Wait for the one lap of america next year, they will have a stage 3 kit on that srt from what I hear, I believe this one only had the stage 1. That will be 300hp, 300ftlb of torque. One nasty little neon.

I believe that they are the same as the D/A Dynamic coilovers that come with the ACR package.

Right-o. I forgot to mention that. That One Lap car also had the Quaiffe LSD installed. Other than that, completely stock, even down the tires, IIRC.

Right again!

The coilovers that are for the srt-4 are brand new and are made by KW. I'm pretty sure the one lap srt had the stage 1 upgrade because I believe it was put on there as a test for the upgrade. I could be wrong though.
