What is wrong with my 89 hatchback? Sometimes when the engine is cold and I accellarate with the gas pedal pushed right in, the car starts to sputter. Then I drop it back in and the rpms go up it's fine, until I change it to a higher gear again. Has this happened to anyone else and does anyone know what this is?

It only does this when it's cold?
Usually when the motor won't rev up or stutters, it's because the distributor rotor is bad or the coil isn't cranking out enough juice.
If it does this all the time (not just when it's cold) I would suspect a clogged fuel filter.

PS-Hmmm...I just read your post more carefully. It CAN rev up...it just won't do it in the higher gears.
That's totally weird. If it CAN rev up, then the rotor/fuel filter are fine...starts to sound more like a computer or sensor problem.
