My double JL sub box

Very clean looking enclosure, nice design with ports and sub trim.

Should sound well also, what freq did you tune the ports to?

Well, the basic idea was to keep as much trunk space as poss, without compromising storage space, and also to get the biggest size box so that i could port it. The ideal box size is 2 CuFt for each sub, so thats 4 CuFt for both, and beleive me, its a damn bog box!! I originally had a double box for the JL's, it come with the second sub i bought off my cousin second hand, but that was just a square sided oblong box, measuring at just over 1.0 CuFt sealed for each sub. I tried it in the trunk and found that it was basically the maximum width, height and depth that i could allow and compromise for, but there was some extra space i could use, and that was the slope of the rear seats. So i set off designing a new box, based on the original one, but included the slope which gave an extra 1.0 CuFt overall. So now each sub has 1.5 CuFt of air space and i can now port them. The old box i used for the single one was 1.5 CuFt and it sounded reallly good, so now ive got TWO really good sounding subs:D I hope this answers your question.

Following from frogg and Swonders comment, ive been busy again working on the box to make it that little bit better, plus i need a decent boot light, so here it is, MORE LED's!!

Firstly, i had to remove the subs, to remove the ports.

then with each port, i made a collor out of paper, with evenly marked lines for each LED and slid it over the port and marked the holes.

After drilling the 4.5mm holes for the 5mm LED's, i then sprayed the ports with silver car paint. Then inserted the LEDs ready for wiring.

heres a close up.

Next came the wiring, and as before, i wired them in set of 3 then paralleled them onto 12 volts.

And heres how it looks powered up.

note. yes i know, i did use blue and white cable, this is because thats all i had lying around.

Lastly, i then repeated everything for all 4 ports, re-assembled everything and powered it up. Heres the finished product.

Yep, sure are. both 12W6's. I originally just had the one, but a good opportunity come along, and i got the other second hand at less than half price:D

Not quite G, i have my own Chinese takeaway, its a family thing.

looking good, where did you put all the wiring for the leds to? did you just splice it into the sub wiring?

On page 1, there is a picture of the side of the box showing the double terminal ive used on the box. Because of the way ive wired up the subs, i actually only need one set of terminals to power the subs, therefore i have used the other set to power the LEDs. Theres a boot courtesy light nearby, which i can hook it up to. All the wiring for the LEDs are internal as the LEDs are. I just drilled a small hole thru the partition to feed the wires from one air spcae to the other, then sealed up the hole.

Don't the magnets from the speakers touch the sub when you close the trunk? Or, "boot" as you call it.

What kind of amp do you have running those? I'm assuming you wired them in series.

How come you decided to relocate the battery to the boot? Or is that a second battery? Do you get any problems with the stock alternator charging them both if that is the case?

Nah, it looks kinda close doesnt it? but theres about an inch clearence between the magnet and box, plus, ive recessed the subs, so they actually sit flush. The excursion of the subs aint that much so hothing to worry about.

Heres a picture of the back of the box, and how ive made it to maximise the room available, its a bit blurry but you get the message.

Excursion depends on the power put to them. JL's have one of the longest excursion's in the business.

maybe, the excursion (Xmax) on my JL's are 0.438 iches or 11.9 mm so theres plenty room there. In my experience, Celestion subs have a bigger excursion length, as apposed to my JL's

Really?.....My 10w6's (in old G20) knocked the grilles straight off the box. Not just PLOP.....more like shot them off the box. I measured about 1 and 1/4" from woofer to grille. I don't know if you've ever seen the JL demo where you apply progressive frequency to the woofer. Those suckers will jump a good 1 and 1/2" to 1 and 3/4".


I take that back. It would throw 1 and 1/4" to 1 and 1/2". I just measured 1 and 3/4" that was way off.

I guess it just depends on how much bass boost you set your amp at.

More like how much power your amp is putting out. Maxed out gains sound nasty.

If I'm not mistaken, the soundwaves are supposed to bounce of the back of the trunk. Wouldn't having the subs so close to the magnet or top of the trunk distort the sound? It has no room to travel and create optimum bass.

I don't know. I really don't think your getting the best bass out of those JL's. But the set-up is nice and as long as your getting the thump then it's all good. I guess you can't keep W6's from sounding bad. But the thing I said about the soundwave travel is very true indeed. You probably don't notice but the sound from your 6x9's or whatever is above the subs is distorted by the bass from the subs. Looks good. I can tell you like LED's.

Standard square boxes should be avoid. His set up is good for the way his car is designed. I also found that my 10W6's are best utilized by the woofer shooting straight up and not "bouncing" off the back of the trunk like most people think. Enclosures are for optimum use of the speaker, in different ranges (sealed, ported). But the facing the enclosure towards the trunk is not always the answer. I also messed with my JL enclosure to get the best sound out of it. Shooting straight up was indeed the answer for my G20. Facing rearward, you only were able to hear the lower frequencies; it sound pretty shitty.
