Computer Issues

Hi I have a 2001 Impala with the 3400 engine. The BCM is bad and I know that I can't just go to the junk yard and get another one and slap it in there without programing from the dealer of course because its coded together to the ECM and the radio. My question is if I do go to the junk yard and get all three from the same car would it know the difference?
I want to add too that so far my car is completely derivable I have 205,000 miles on it and just when the car gets warm will I get the picture of a car with a wrench on it and my dash and radio lights go out, on longer trips of 35 miles or so when the light comes on will the transmission start to act up and I get a code of the TCC stuck open. When its cold I don't get any lights and the car runs perfectly fine. I have had it to the dealer and they said it needs a BCM. I just have a chance at both computers cheap is why Im asking.

I have an 03 and I don't think the radio has the theft feature so unless you know for sure yours probably does not either. The only downside is the vin is programmed into the PCM and maybe when you get the emissions test they may notice the mismatch, then again maybe not. It sounds like it should work although I think there is a crank shaft sensor learn mode when replacing a new PCM, So not sure how that will effect a swap.

Hmm Thanks for the reply la1. I am not certain mine has theft lock on the radio. I do know it has the blinking red light on it. Luckily in Michigan we don't have emissions tests so that shouldn't be an issue. I asked a guy at the junk yard about this and he was thinking as long as I can match up as many of the code numbers on the computer tag itself there shouldn't be an issue. I just don't want to spend $40 on maybe.

You run the possibility of your vehicle not running, or loss of communication with other modules looking for the original VIN....

Does anyone know what the different sequences of numbers mean on the BCM?
