I need to replace the oxygen sensor on my 2002 Ford Windstar LX. The mechanic is charging 50 to 100 dollars. Can I do it myself? And if so Where is it located? Thank you.

The windstar has four oxygen sensors. There are two for each of the exhaust manifolds, before they are joined together by the "Y-pipe" under the vehicle. The Y-pipe is so named because it roughly looks like a "Y" with two pipes (each attached to an exhaust manifold) joining to a single pipe. There is a catalytic converter in line with each of the pipes before the joining. An oxygen sensor is located on each side of the catalytic converters. This means there are two "up stream" sensors (located on the engine side of the catalytic converters) and two "down stream" sensors (located between the catalytic converters and the joint).

The two manifolds are named "Bank 1" and "Bank 2", with "Bank 1" describing the manifold that is closer to the passenger compartment, and "Bank 2" describing the manifold that is closest to the front of the car. "Sensor 1" is located between the manifold and the catalytic converter, while "Sensor 2" is located between the catalytic converter and the joint of the y-pipe.

You will need to get under the vehicle to change the sensor, and you'll need the correct size wrench to remove and replace the O2 sensor. I believe is it located in a spot under the car that corresponds to the area under the front passenger's seat, although I don't have any experience with your specific model. They make special socket wrenches for the oxygen sensor, which is a standard 20mm (not sure of the size) deep well sock with a slot cut in to accomadate the sensor wires. You can sometimes rent/borrow the sockets from the autoparts store.
