I have a 2004 chevy impala today the battery light pop on. Went to get it checked out it came back battery good(its new) but needs to be recharged it was suppose to be at 8 something it came back at 3 something. Went to get food was in there for a little over an hour started driving. Everything on the dash started blinking THAN Gas gauge went to empty,(over a half a tank) mileage went down, gas light came on,air bag light, security. Radio started to static than everything went dark. Trying to make it home car slowed d own, steering wheel got tight and car dyed out. Got a jump nothing ..all it did was click. Got car towed had to lock all the doors manually. Someone mention the alternator. If that is the problem,
+Whats the next steps.
+How do I get my car started
Any info is helpful. T.I.A
Ps it was making a weird noise to hard to explain NOT clicking, ticking, popping, idk if its the sound all cars make before and after its dying/dead.

" Went to get it checked out it came back battery good(its new) but needs to be recharged it was suppose to be at 8 something it came back at 3 something."

Who in the world, "checked" this out.....battery needs to be recharged? Duh.....If they checked the battery, they didn't check the charging system.....where ever you went, don't go there again.....it's obvious you were just running on battery, because the system was not charging, and the battery eventually died.....

Yes, it does sound like the alternator, or the circuits to it has a problem.......most auto stores will check this out for free......or if you have access to a voltmeter, you can check it yourself......

A fully charged battery is 12.6 volts.....with key on, nothing running, should be above 12.0 volts.......should be above 10 volts while cranking.......when running, the voltage should be 13-14 volts.....

Obviously, the first thing you have to do is recharge the battery(alternators do not charge dead batteries very well)......then run tests to see if the alternator is charging.....hopefully you will find someone competent this time....

And depending on the age of the battery, you may have killed it.

is it a sealed battery battery or is it fillable. If the battery is fillable see if it needs "distilled" water only. Wear eye protection when working with batteries. I am sure of this but always good to check, the serpentine belt has not fallen off ?

The belt is new and not lose. I dont know what kind of battery it is. But I think its sealed.

You have been given a good place to start:

Did you check the BCM? Run codes?

Get the battery fully charged. Do that disconnected from the car. This eliminates any drain. I had the same issue in my 05 3.4L.

I reset the BCM.
To do this follow these steps. Will take a half hour.

Connect the battery. Make sure all accessories are OFF!
DO NOT attempt to start the car. Put the key in, and turn it to RUN. Turn it off and pull the key.
Put the key back in and turn it to RUN. The lights on the dash will come on. All the normal stuff like , ALT, OIL, SECURITY ETC. Leave the key ON for 30 mins.
Turn it OFF and remove the key. Put the key back in and start the car.
Any codes will reappear and you can get them again. This will solve a multitude of problems. Worked for me and good luck.
