heater hose compression fitting at block leaking

edit: sorry this is a 2001, 3.8L

As title says , dripping heater hose at the compression fitting just before the weird clip that attaches to the engine block.

I am considering cutting the hose just behind the compression fitting, moving the hose out of the holder because it is shorter now after cutting, and using a hose clamp to hold it to the pipe coming off the engine block.

I have read a few people did this... again, keeping the van another 6 months, then selling it.

Thoughts?http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=41415&d=1293984183

can i cut on rubber hose side of compression fitting, then hose clamp the hose to the quick connect piece, or do i have to remove that and hose clamp to the outlet off the block

There is a pipe that you can slide the hose over and use the hose clamp to secure it.
I had a 1996, so yours may be a little different.
I cut the hose as close to the Quick Connect as possible, but still needed to move (bend) the hose support a little to get the length that I felt comfortable with....with no stress and not having the hose against something sharp or hot.

My hose clamp was quite secure and lasted YEARS without issue.

OK, I will give it a shot. Do I leave the weird attachment, or does that come off as well....

If so, how about getting the compression fitting off the current connector... any tricks there... do I need to remove the whole contraption

or do you mean the pipe is the pipe that weird connect is attached to....

cut off compression fitting with dremmel... that burned a hole in the quick connect plastic rotten fitting, so I cut that off leaving the metal pipe. Hose clamped that rubber hose to the metal pipe extension and so far so good.

everything worked out pretty good. I bought a new quick connect fitting, but didn't use it and will take it back to advanced....

The "weird attachment" is a quick connect hose fitting that will come off without cutting.

That type of fitting consists of two parts, the outer black housing (which includes a barbed extention into the hose), and the white inner part that secures the fitting to the nipple. The nipple has a sholder on which the inner white part rests. The fitting is retained when the two white tabs seen in your photo engage the frames of the windows on the black outer part. If the tabs are pressed "just so" the fitting releases.

This fitting failed on my vehicle due to the long term heat effects on the black plastic. It became brittle and leaked and crumbled when I removed the fitting from the nipple. Replacmetns for the fitting are available, but the safest approach is to use a conventinal hose clamp to secure it to the nipple.

I cut mine off the silver crimped collar with a small cutting wheel (as suggested). I had to crush the reminant of the barbed part with a pair of pliers to get that out of the hose, then the length was sufficient to reach the nipple without issue.
