Did they replace the sender unit or the complete assembly??? In my opinion that is very costly.Sure there was not any other work performed?

according to Alldatadiy.com for the 2000 windstar (I'm pretty confident they're similar) the pump is $444.62 and the time allotment is 2.0 hours. That doesn't include draining and refilling. So, depending on the shop labour rate and any other incidentals required... while steep, it might be right. I know the tank has to come out in order to replace the pump.

Generally I count on parts times 2 for an out the door price as a very rough estimate.

I don't suppose you wanted to do that yourself eh?

So the parts, sender and filter came to $456.99. Labor, 3.5 hours, $343.00. Plus $15 shop supplies. I did do one of these before but I was 10 years younger and 100 lbs lighter. Just didn't feel like crawling around on the cold ground.

I had mine replaced at a friends shop a couple months ago to solve an intermittent "warm engine" no run condition. The fuel pump completely solved the start-up problem, I am thankful for that.

Now about cost, I paid, with a small "friend's" discount, right at $510 out the door. Parts were roughly $325, labor/shop fees $185. The only thing I really am kinda miffed about was the the AirTex complete fuel pump assembly (exact model) could have been bought by me online for $150 with tax and shipping, or $220 out the door from a local O'Reilly's. I would think my friends shop could get parts wholesale so the $325 on the bill seemed to be where he made up for my labor discount.

About a year ago, I needed a pump replaced in an emergency (towed to the mechanic). got charged $900.

I've done this job twice on my own '99. It was not fun either time.

In fact, I've done it three times because one of the AirTex units I got from AutoZone had an open circuit in the pressure sensor circuit and caused engine emission fault codes. I could have easily checked the sensor, with an ohmmeter, before installing but did not take the time .... bad move!
