I will assume you mean a 98 windstar.I would remove the entire compressor and clutch assembly. If your actual ac compressor mounting bolts are stripped, you will have to find a way to put force on the back of the bolt while turning them to loosen the bolts. The factory manual procedure is listed below. Good Luck.
Removal and Installation
CAUTION:
If installing a new air conditioning compressor due to an internal failure of the old unit, you must carry out the following procedures to remove contamination from the air conditioning system.
l If A/C flushing equipment is available, carry out flushing of the air conditioning system prior to installing a new air conditioning compressor. For additional information, refer to «Section 412-00».
l If A/C flushing equipment is not available, carry out filtering of the air conditioning system after a new air conditioning compressor has been installed. For additional information, refer to «Section 412-00».
l Install a new evaporator core orifice (19D990) as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure.
l Install a new suction accumulator (19C836) as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure.
Note:
Installation of a new suction accumulator is not required when repairing the air conditioning system except when there is physical evidence of system contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the suction accumulator.
Note:
The A/C compressor mounting bolts must be removed with the A/C compressor.
All vehicles
1. If flushing of the refrigerant system has not been performed, recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «Section 412-00».
2. Remove the generator. For additional information, refer to «Section 414-02».
3. Raise the vehicle. For additional information, refer to «Section 100-02».
µ 4. Completely loosen the lower A/C compressor mounting bolts.
µ 5. Loosen the bolt and disconnect the compressor manifold and tube assembly from the A/C compressor.
6. Lower the vehicle.
µ 7. Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch field coil electrical connector.
µ 8. Completely loosen the A/C compressor mounting bolt.
µ 9. Remove the three bolts from the A/C mounting bracket.
µ 10. Remove the bolts from the generator mounting bracket.
µ 11. Completely loosen the generator mounting bracket bolt.
µ 12. Lift the generator mounting bracket until the remaining bolt clears the frame rail and remove the bolt. Remove the generator mounting bracket.
µ 13. Detach the wiring harness pin-type retainer from the A/C mounting bracket and remove the bracket.
Vehicles with auxiliary climate control
µ 14. Disconnect the auxiliary refrigerant line from the compressor manifold and tube assembly.
l Discard the O-ring seal.
All vehicles
µ 15. Disconnect the compressor manifold and tube assembly from the suction accumulator. Position the compressor manifold and tube assembly aside.
l Discard the O-ring seal.
µ 16. Completely loosen the remaining bolt and remove the A/C compressor and A/C mounting brace.
l Discard the O-ring seals.
17. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
l If a new A/C compressor is to be installed, the A/C field coil (2987) and the A/C clutch (2884) must be transferred from the old unit. For additional information, refer to «Clutch And Clutch Field Coil» in this section.
l If filtering of the refrigerant system is not be to performed, lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil or equivalent. For additional information, refer to «Section 412-00» for refrigerant oil addition.
l Install new O-ring seals lubricated with clean PAG oil or equivalent.
18. If filtering of the refrigerant system is not to be performed, evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «Section 412-00».
