My 97 Saturn SC1 dies as I slow to stop. It will restart but the RPM goes very high for a little while before it drops back down to normal. What do I need to do to fix it?

The first thing is to scan for any trouble codes ! This is generally done for free at most auto parts stores ( i.e.- Autozone , Advance Auto , etc. ) . It could be a variety of things causing this and the scan should narrow that down to a specific area . You don't want to just start replacing expensive parts until you're somewhat sure what the problem is ! Good luck and keep us updated !

Remove the throttle body and clean it. Also, remove the IAC valve, clean it and the passage. If that doesn't fix it, replace the IAC valve.

Does your car have automatic transmission? My '97 SC1 with the manual experienced a similar issue. The engine speed would flare whenever I depressed the clutch pedal and take a while to go back to normal, but the engine would never die (the clutch is disengaged as I approach a stop). I had a P1404 (EGR Valve Closed Position Performance) code, but nothing else, and the engine was still strong. The puzzling part was the engine never idle roughly. The problem seemed to show up suddenly, but it took a year for me to really notice it. It took another six months for me to solve the problem. What was wrong? I knocked a vacuum hose from the intake manifold off the evaporative canister purge solenoid when I changed the crankshaft position sensor for a crank-no start issue. I'm not sure if this will help, but I hope it does.
