99 windstar rattle

99 Windstar 3.8 112400mi have a rattle sound like something loose in oil pan , not rapping but sounds like when a heat shield is loose. my mechanic says i need a motor.it stops when driving around but can be heard when at stop light or idling.thanks in advance k

Of course it could be a number of things .... but some folks have had clicking noises caused by a internal plastic baffle breaking loose in the upper intake manifold. It is fairly easy to check out. Can be glued back in place.

i thought it was comming from rear valve cover area to check if a rocker was loose , all was good. i took it out for a ride and seems to sometimes quiet and then sometimes get it back. could there be either a loose oil pick up tube or an internal cover that is loose drives fine with mo noise until slowing down or at a stop.
