At 4.30am I got an urgent call to.. of all things.. fix a redundant broken link on a website. That request is utterly surreal in retrospect. I should have told them to f*ck off.

15 mins later I rolled my car 3 or 4 times after taking a corner at 150. The drivers side roof is nearly impacted into the seat, so how I got away without a scratch I don't know. Well, not quite unharmed, my back is killing me. I ended up on my head.

I can remember every single microsecond of the accident. I think I've lost my taste for fast cars now.

Dude,

it is most important to have you with us still. Thank God(zilla) you are alive, and for that matter reasonably unharmed. All that comes to mind is 'WOW!' and 'Damn!', and again 'Thank God(zilla) you are OK'

So....

what now?

You were only doing 99km's per hour on that 100km piece of road, so no doubt insurance will cover it aye :)

Halcyon
11-08-2001, 01:51 PM
yeah man, right on. Actually I'm fucking glad I wasn't hurt. I'd rather be dead than severely injured.

I was outside of my legal driving hours.. I've been on my restricted for 4 years. Shameful. It didn't contribute to the accident however, so they may still pay out with a bit of encouragement.

Paid the insurance last week, timely.

I don't think any charges will be pressed, no-one is out of pocket except for me. The cop didn't seem to think he would bother with any.

I don't know if I want another skyline. At least, not a fast one. Still love the look of them, but almost every skyline owner I know has had an accident now.

Oh yeah.. this is the 5th serious accident on that particular corner in less than 3 months. The last one closed the road for a day and claimed a life. Maraetai and Beachlands together have a population of less than 2000, so that says something about the condition of the roads here. Although in this case, I can only blame me. I don't know how I convinced myself 150 was a safe driving speed.

As brendonm said, at least ur ok....

But regarding above quote....don't lose the faith!!!! You love Skylines, give urself some time to get over the shock of the accident. I don't think I'd want to get in ANY car after rolling one like that. But give urself some time and see how u feel.

Halcyon on a good note glad to hear you are not seriously hurt. This is another testimine to the construction of a Skyline.

On the other hand with all the press lately of boy racers bla bla not only doing 150 on public roads is very dangerous but STUPID. I am sure all of us had bent or broken the speed limit at one time or another. You just need to use a bit more common sence mate.

I haven't - not in either Skyline, anyway. My only crash was in my old Pulsar, and no-one in their right mind would suggest that a 1.3L Pulsar was inherently dangerous. A Skyline is one of the safer cars you can have - the only unsafe thing about them lies in what they encourage us to do

Anyways, again - glad you're ok.

Got any pics???? :p

I'd love to read some of these replies in depth, but yesterdya afternoon the detail-sensing part of my vision disappeared. Probably from a bump on the head, and eyesight should return in a few days. Touch-typing still works :)

Dad got lots of pics but I can't see to upload them, hehe. They'll be here soon. The car is totally mangled.

At the same yard there was another sklye that had wrapped itself around a tree and done a 90 degree mod to it's body. Scary, scary stuff. This has been a big wakeup for me.

Not clique.. cliche. We are a bit cliquey sometimes though :)

From here it's get a new car. Either another GTS25.. but a coupe.. or a 300zx. I really like the interior of the 300zx, and you can get some nice bodykits.

It'll all come down to comparative cost.

moondog
11-10-2001, 04:44 PM
you could probably get a TT Z for less than another facelift R33; specially a coupe. They also tend to go fairly sideways, I've heard though. And they tend to get fairly hot under the bonnet, and remember that doing virtually anything to the engine means it comes right out of the engine bay.

Also remember that Croydon's still have a 2 door R34 25GTt

btw, those pics look scary! Damn it's a good thing you're ok.

And on the lottery ticket thing; I remember one of the Billy Connolly shows I have on video somewhere, he went off about that little cliche - along the lines of what Tazdev said, but in typical Connolly style :) :silly2:

No air bag on yer car??!?

hhmm I saw this Volvo flip over in a wet road, I was in a bus at atime but this guys did not see the 3 lane road become 2 lane road sign (bloody volvo drivers, they are in their own la la land) so this guy screaming down the hill and bamm no where to go but off the road... next thing I see is this volvo I think it was s40 or v70( what ever it's a volvo). Hit the pedestrian path and bamm fliped over to it's roof and All I see is white gas fills up the car (Air bags) there must been at least 8 or 12 air bags in that car...LOL.

Driver just crawled out of car and looked bit shocked HA.

it was aewsome seen though... rare chance to see actually volvo popping out all the airbags.

Raf, trust you to find all the cool icons within 8 posts. :lol2:

I don't want a turbo, since I'm not interested in exceeding the speed limit anymore. I'm going to take my pleasure out of a mint-condition vehicle that looks very nice.
I haven't given much thought to price, but if the insurance company hands me $23k on a silver platter, I'd like to get a nice Z, with enough left over to put a big exhaust on it, a nice bodykit and spray it whatever colour I like. :) Is this reasonable?

The air bags didn't fire! It would have helped if they did.
I was cohesive and alert enough to hang onto the steering wheel for grim death, it didn't hold me down but it stopped me from being thrown all around the car. The seatbelt helped, but not much. On the other hand, without the seatbelt, I'd be a bloody mess right now.

I'm pleased if even one person sees those pics and slows down.

Sorry to hear that dude ;/

You talk about a corner up around Beachlands/Maraetai.. my friend flipped his old-style Starlet GT and then rolled 3 times when he was going out there to pick up his girlfriend for the 2000 Big Day Out. He'd driven the roads like.. at least 120 times before ;/

Ah, the Z.. go for it dude. I _adore_ driving my girlfriends one. Expect to use a fair bit of petrol though.. at least as much as your skyline. As always, check prices on http://www.trade-exchange.co.nz , http://www.autopoint.co.nz and all those other car sites. We picked hers up from Turners for $6500

Halcyon
11-11-2001, 03:18 PM
Wow, nice price.

There's a niiice manual Z on Autopoint for $12K. If insurance fully pays out, I can get a full bodykit and a lookatme chameleon paintjob too with the leftover cash.

An auction sounds neat. Are the cars on them normally any good? How often do decent vehicles come up at auctions?

Who does 300ZX bodykits?

A while back there was a TT Z going for $10k on Autopoint, with a fully redone interior and stage 3 mods.

11-11-2001, 05:04 PM
OK, I really feel that 150 at night was excessive, and that you don't deserve another nice car like that. And if I was the insurance broker, you'd have a tough time squeezing bus fare out of me. For crying out loud, you were driving over the posted speed limit AND the logical speed limit, and on top of that, you had restrictions on when you could drive. Jeepers... I'm just glad it had an impact on you.

Halcyon
11-11-2001, 08:53 PM
Verboom: I accept that, but I can't get around that fact I was told to turn an hour drive into a 20 min trip at 5am when I wasn't coherent, and the loss of my job was hanging over my head. It was one of those situations where you have to choose between two bad ends. No-one else was hurt and this has instigated a major policy change at work, so I'm not certain I chose wrongly. I'm sure as heck not the first person to drive that fast, and I know you can't point a blameless finger, buddy. This WOULD be my first time driving that fast in such a dangerous situation, and I've learnt from it. I've had my accident, that's all I can say.

As someone said above the culture here is to take our cars to the limits and I bought into that fully. My own fault, I exposed myself to this knowing what could happen. Instead of throwing all that aside, I'll build on it. You can't expect everything to be roses all the time.

Halcyon,

do the people you work for know where you live???

There is NO possible way that they could give you the sack for arriving late due to how far away you live. You cold have sued them BIG time for wrongful dismissal.

In the end you didn't get there on time any way did you??

Halcyon
11-11-2001, 09:28 PM
The thing I was called in to fix was negligible. I wouldn't fix it if I was there right now.

I told the guy I lived an hour distant which elicited the "we need it in 20 mins, get going" response.

The call I got was placed by our American owners, so suing them is still an option. However, the owner of the NZ part of the company has given the yanks a hell of a lot of shit since the accident, and has offered any help he can provide. I have a couple of weeks paid leave now, which is more than I expected.

I like sitations where either me or someone else can fully take the blame, but it comes down to: I drove stupid, but I would never be out there half awake if it wasn't for that call. Shared blame sucks, but I'm not going to try to decide who is more responsible. I just want a vehicle back and the opportunity to prove I've learnt from this. I know that what contributed to my employers side of the deal will never happen again either, so you could say the situation is very nearly resolved.

Just to keep some of you happy, I'm going to start appending "yes, I still think I'm stupid" to all my posts.

s13man
11-11-2001, 10:52 PM
i here u dude and i feel for u also.

Z's are a great car and if you get a normally aspirated one and sort out the suspension then it will be a very hard car to push past its limits. judging from what u say these limits won't be approached.

be very careful though when purchasing your Z that it is in very good condition as if pretty much anything needs fixing on it u can talk to your bank manager. i personally think if its selling for less than 15k then be wary.

thats my ten cents worth anyway

Halcyon
11-11-2001, 11:22 PM
I filled out the claim form, and can make some assumptions:

They don't ask for time of accident.
They ask for impact speed as well as prior speed.

Prior speed that I lost control with aside, I killed a lot of momentum before hitting the bank, or I wouldn't be here now.

It all looks rather good, and by the lack of accident time I would imagine they don't actually care if you were on your restricted.

Another vehicle wasn't involved, and today the number of accidents on that corner went up one more again, so things look good.

Hopefully that's the end to this thread, aside from the victory post when I get the money. :)

zapf
11-12-2001, 07:35 AM
Halcyon,
The car is not too bad at all considering you came off at 150. The air bags didn't deploy because the sensor is for frontal impact only. Which you had none... its to stop you from hitting the steering wheel.
BTW next time don't hold on to your steering wheel. It can be dangrous.

I would ask you to reconsider the Z, they are not very reliable cars. And cost a bucket load to fix if anything goes wrong. 300ZX have basiclly the same suspension system / layout as R33 skylines. (Suprise!)

Guess you should have got those tires / suspension we talked about earlier..... next time don't drive fast until you get those essencials.

BTW as you found out... Skylines are a strong car.

Cheers

hey Halcyon. looks like you are coming away from this as a hefty learning experience. That's what life is really isn't it, a whole bunch of learning experiences one after another. I used to have a gts25 r33 myself, loved that car hugely. It got written off from under me by my insurance company when a student pulled out in front of me. He was completely in the wrong, and I know he too walked away from it as a learning experience (he lives just 100 meteres from our place - I was that close to home!) I got back into a skyline, this time piloting a r32 gts-4, I wanted a turbo, as I felt I lacked that in the gts25 (in hind site the gts25 was great in itself), and I definitely wanted to have far more control in future if a similar scenario layed itself out in front of me. 4wd, 4ws, abs. Since then I have been far more cautious of cars beside the road, you just can't second guess another driver eh.

All the best with what you get in the end. After something like that there are two paths you can take if you decide to keep driving (the only option really this day in age), one get back into a car and brush it all off, willy nilly and go back to your old ways, and two come away from it having gained a shite load of experience from it, realising your not invincible. It's obvious which one you have chosen, onya mate.
On the skyline club main site in the wrecks section mine was the charcoal gts-25 with frontal damage, I think from memory it was picture 13 (great luck eh, even more hilarious when you realise it was late on Thursday the 12, with it almost being Friday the 13th! hehe)

Two points Halcyon.
Well, three actually.

1. Full credit to you for being honest abut how/why this whole thing happened....you learned and didnt get too badly knocked about in the process.

2. Zapf is correct regarding reliability on the Z's....having owned Z's and Skylines I dont think the Z is even close in either reliability or build quality...remember too that MOST Z's here are 89/90 models so at least 4 years older than an R33...maybe more.

3. The handling of a Z is WAY twitchier than a skyline. In the wet they are a particularly nervous car....lots of fun yes, a quick point to point car that inspires confidence, NO WAY.

I'd own another Z but not for NZ Roads.

Anyway, good luck pal and let us know what you end up with.

Haha Friday the 13th. That's evil.

My sight hasn't improved since the accident, we're looking at weeks rather than days now. I'm still holding optimistic. In any case, just spent two dreadful days at hospital having every worthless test imaginable done. At once point my vision was monotone orange from dye they'd injected me with, and no points for guessing I was peeing fluorescent, indelible orange earlier today. Thank goodness I have good aim.

A couple of people have suggested an R34 GTS-4. I'm not completely sold on the idea of a turbo yet, and I'm told you can get one of these for under $20k, which is pretty damn cheap for an R34 of any model. Does this sound about right? I guess it's time to start shopping around and see whats coming in.

If nothing else Just be thankful that your ok - some people don't get a chance to learn from that kind of mistake - one of my best friends is in a wheelchair for doing almost exactly what you did, and take it from me you wouldn't want to go through what he and I have been through over the last 5 years.

Thanks MattyG. Right from the moment the car stopped moving and I knew I was ok I appreciated that it could have been much, much worse.

But, we live and learn, and self-crippling isn't far off being really hurt. That's why I want to get back to enjoying a car, back to work, as soon as my sight is back on track.

If that doesn't happen, well, looks like I'll have plenty of time to enjoy the beach.
