Oil question

The last time i changed my oil i jused 10W 40 but it ran low so i added more my question is the next time it go low again can i added 20w 50 insted of the 10w 40 or will this mess thing up.

what do you mean low? your oil level, if it is going low you have a leak or you are burning i thought the recomended is 5w 50. the thicker oil you use the more resistance you will have on you internals

your not really meant to mix oils, so i am told,

im burning oil i think but i can use 5w 50 right

i think the first number is the weight (thickness) and the second is the temp range i think

10w 40 is FINE for higher temperatures (IE ARIZONA or the like) and you can mix the oils.....

uhhh so then what is a synthetic blend?

You'll be able to tell from the labels, it'll say "synthetic". Personally I think if you truly love your car, u can indulge it with some of that stuff. I've heard that you can get about an extra 1000 miles before an oil change, and burns much less than regular old oil. Got some for my friend's 93 camry, the car was just purring after we put in 3.7 bottles of that stuff. =P

The 5w30 (for example) is what the viscosity of the oil will be like at cold and hot oil temperatures, ie when the oil is cold it will act like 5 weight oil (thinner oil), when the oil is hot the oil will act like 30 weight oil (thicker oil).

All the variations in viscosity will suit different situations (ex. 10w40 for summer or 5w30 for winter). But for most driving you can use 5w30 all year round. Check your manual.

BTW, if you are burning oil try going to a thicker oil like 10w40, it should cut down the smoke (or an oil additive like RESTORE if you have low compression or something that will swell you valve guide seals or something that says "Miracle cure" on the label. :D) Good luck.

Newer BMW's oil change every 15,000 miles with their synthetic. No thanks, I would do it atleast every 5,000miles in that case.

all oils detergents break down at 3000 miles . but they still lubricate the only thing is it doesnt clean you engine and starts leaving deposits. bet synthetic is the shizzznit

because there are SOOOO many variables as to how and when the oil will break down, so saying that it breaks down at 3k is wrong

im not saying it exactly 3000 but that is when it starts breaking down . now newer car like my carmaro you don change the oil till 5500 and when you do the oil is black as tar

again that statement is inaccurate, there is SOOOOOOO many factors involved in how the oil breaks down that saying it does at that mileage is ignorant, here are just some factors

viscosity
ambient temperature
engine RPM (what RPM you run at)
oil filtration
oil temperature
engine characteristics
engine condition


that is just a short list of the factors involved, not to mention the brand of oil you are using

EDIT: technology is a beautiful thing

i am talking about the detergents (the cleaning aspect of the oil) that is all!!!

i know what the detergents are but i am saying that the detergents DO NOT necessairly go bad or even begin to go bad at that mileage........i listed the factors that could cause the oil to break down
