Hi guys,
Whilst travelling home from holiday yesterday, I was rudely interupted from my book by a mclaren orange lm looking f1. I was on the A14 road about 50 miles from Silverstone. Now i only saw it from the back, but it had the wing and the side details as per the lm and was registered on an N registration (1995/96). Does the xp1lm ever leave mclaren's factory as I would guess this was it??
I'm just intrigued and after seeing it I had sweaty palms and big adrenaline rush afterwards as I've never seen an F1 on the road being driven normally although I have sat in 13 MAC when Tony Smith (genesis and phil collins manager) owned it (not sure if he still does or not?
I eagerly await your responses and opinions!
Anthony

That would presumerably be #16R
See this thread. (specifically this post because you probably saw similar views)
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=6911199&postcount=181
I still haven't witnessed an F1 in person so I'm extremely jealous :D

Looking at bits on the internet would concur that it would be #16R.
I feel very priviledged now not only to have sat in one but seen two now!! Seen a few others too and think they're the best thing ever! I've even been priviledged enough to feel some of the titanium spanners from the tool kit!!!

FYI: I merged these last last three posts from the Ultimate LM thread.
Congrats on the spotting - I can imagine the thrill. :bigthumb:
Unless there has been a recent change, Tony Smith does still have #020 however the reg plate has changed to 'F1 T00' as of about 1 year ago.

Yeah that would make sense. He did have F1 TOO on his Alfa Romeo 8C and Bentley previous to that. Not seen him out in the Mclaren for a couple of years since he started to tail off his racing commitments.
Pure awesomeness in car form = Mclaren F1.

Hi Chaps, my first post, so please be gentle!
Mr 16R suggested that I take a look at this forum (I usually inhabit Pistonheads and Porsche Club GB) whilst he gently drove me down to Bristol the other weekend.
Thank for your kind comments on the video, sorry it was a bit shaky but it was difficult to keep a small camera still when under those kinds of forces!! I was also very careful where I pointed it....
We seemed to get a lot of attention when we stopped for a break at the services:
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p219/atkinsjs/Caring%20With%20Cars/IMAG0367.jpgbut then the heavens openned on the last leg which made the conditions somewhat interesting!
We were given a nice parking slot:
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p219/atkinsjs/Caring%20With%20Cars/CIMG4607.jpg
And were at the front of the queue for some nicely cooked Pig, it was a great event for a good cause (Children's Hospice)
On the way home we stopped again for fuel and found the spoiler useful for putting our sandwiches on whilst we ate lunch...
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p219/atkinsjs/Caring%20With%20Cars/IMAG0376.jpg
I tried to get a good shot out of the window with the interior reflected in the mirror, but it didn't work well...
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p219/atkinsjs/Caring%20With%20Cars/IMAG0374.jpg
It was a very interesting and enjoyable experience! very loud and my whole perception of speed has been recalibrated, I now keep looking at the Ultima website thinking that building one of those would be the closest I could get to the experience....just how can I explain it to the Wife.....?
One of the surprising aspects of the trip was that it was a comfortable place to be for over 4 hours, it started, ran and did what it was supposed to just as well as any cooking hatchback and we averaged 13mpg on the trip which is better than a Range Rover or Cayenne Turbo!
Thanks to Mr 16R for the trip!

Thanks Chaps, I do recall a Z4 coming alongside, at least you played it fairly careful.
The car obviously elicits quite a reaction and we did have some idiots that launched themselves up the inside, including a Bike that came past at 3 figure leptons just as 16R was about to change lane, there is very little rear view so the situational awareness of what is behind and in the 3/4s is very limited, that could have been very messy....
The worst car driver was probably that of a Renault Clio that kept pulling up on either side trying to take photos with his phone whilst weaving erratically, we do hope he got the car back to his mummy in one piece.
On the whole though people are remarkably appreciative of it and treat it with respect.
The Windscreen Wiper behaved a little erratically again on the way home, and we found the Rain X worked best above a certain speed...it was just there was zero visibility below that speed....and then on-lookers started crowding in to take a look and it all got a wee bit stressful for a few moments...
My little Porker felt just a little slow as I went home afterwards.....

Got a nice surprise today while visiting the inlaws in Northhamptonshire. We were at Sywell aerodrome watching the air traffic when this lot rocked up. The highlight is obvious. I have some more pics if anyone is interested... Thanks 16R for letting me have a sit in the car. Most excellent behaviour indeed...
PS I will have some new professional pics of the XP2 bonnet coming soon if anyone is interested.

Hello 16R, just a question out of curiosity. Do you find any problems in visibility regarding overtaking etc. caused by the central driving position as even in a LH drive car you can often get a look up the nearside of the vehicle in front?

Just found out about this thread today, and still can't believe the fact that a real Mac F1 GTR owner would take his time to share the experiences with us car lovers :-). Respect to you sir!
Btw, on a sidenote, i'm looking for some reference photos for my custom model (diecast) project that features the #16R chassis as the central subject. I 'm in dire need of some close -up engine shots (and not just the central block but also the exhaust and suspension that can be seen once the rear covers have been removed) and some shots of the dashboard. I know this is kinda a big favor to ask for, but i trust of all places on the Internet, this is precisely where i should go for them :-). So if you don't mind, please share me those invaluable photos :). Many thanks in advance!

Will they do for now? Was it specifically #16R's dashboard and engine / exhaust shots, or any short-tail GTR's?....

Just note that the engine covers were not orange when it wore the FINA racing livery. They were probably blue like 17R.
It also would not have had those catalysts or mufflers.

Detail shots of the GTR's always astound me, they look so much more complicated and messy than the road cars. Suppose thats the atraction, it's a machine with a purpose and not that of looking nice even though it does so in spectacular fashion. Typical of most racing cars actually come to think of it.

From the photos of the West liveried short tail, those catalytic converter was not used:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/Peloton25/McLaren%20F1%20L/95_engine.jpg (Thanks Peloton25!)
And that was also the case on the original model i've got here:
http://i937.photobucket.com/albums/ad214/newplayer111/Custom%20project%20-%20Mclaren%20F1%20GTR%20Short%20tail%20of%201996/fabiomodels034.jpg
As you can also notice in the photo, the central block (engine cover?) was in blue. But was there any other differences between the 2 engines ?

The cat's were only added when the car was converted for road use, hence why they are shown in #16R but not on the shot of #03R.

Racing CAT's are only used when a car us driven to the circuit and then back home again, unless the owner id prepared to remove them for the race and then refit them afterwards. Also used on track day cars as then the car can be used straight away on the circuit and on the road. Most of the racers I know don't use CAT's for racing anyway, it's an un-necessary restriction.

The man in the clip is Tiff Needell, failed racing driver [according to Jason Plato ;)] and the car at that time belong to a Mr Bridger [Here is a thread where Mr Bridger posted (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=593482)]; the car is now in the ownership of someone else ;)

Those are indeed very interesting information :)
Anyway, here are some of the questions i've got about the #16R that i'm working on a custom diecast project :)
1, I already knew that the frontal compartment of the GTR can be removed, but how about the luggage compartment we see on the road car? From this photo, they might just be removable as the other covers are?
http://www.renaissance-models.com/images/details/McLaren_96/McLaren_F1_GTR_96_Bigazzi_LM96_interieur-1.jpg
Was the fire extinguisher on the original FINA car red or black? On the base model i have here, it's red http://i937.photobucket.com/albums/ad214/newplayer111/Custom%20project%20-%20Mclaren%20F1%20GTR%20Short%20tail%20of%201996/fabiomodels035.jpg
But this says otherwise: http://www.renaissance-models.com/images/details/McLaren_96/LM96_McLaren_Bigazzi_05.jpg
2,What is this part's function? I knew it wasn't there on the road car?
http://www.renaissance-models.com/images/details/McLaren_96/LM96_McLaren_Bigazzi_06.jpg
3, Were those plugs supposed to go directly to the cockpit?
http://www.renaissance-models.com/images/details/McLaren_96/LM96_McLaren_Bigazzi_09.jpg
http://www.renaissance-models.com/images/details/McLaren_96/LM96_McLaren_Bigazzi_07.jpg
4,[EDIT]: Forgot this, were the vents on the front cover perforated ? On my base model those are not:
http://i937.photobucket.com/albums/ad214/newplayer111/Custom%20project%20-%20Mclaren%20F1%20GTR%20Short%20tail%20of%201996/fabiomodels030.jpg
(This is the underside of the front)
On the other side, it looks like this:
http://i54.tinypic.com/azi13a.jpg
4, Though i have found a lot of photos on the subject, close ups on the tires (specifically the branding of Michelin Pilot SX + the brake callipers) are still missing. Anyone have those and wish to share ? Please keep in mind that i'm looking for footages of the #38 FINA that raced at Le Mans 1996
Also, if possible, can somebody give me close up photo on the dashboard? Those i've received here are good, but i'm trying to replicate even the lettering over each dial and switch, so anything closer will help :)
Thanks again guys :p

trying to replicate the lettering in 1/18th scale will be an incredible task, just about readable/doable in 1/12th scale

...but how about the luggage compartment we see on the road car? From this photo, they might just be removable as the other covers are?
Held closed with a pair of Dzus fasteners at the top corners - they are hinged at the bottom and fold down the same way they would on a road car or the panel can be removed.

2,What is this part's function? I knew it wasn't there on the road car?
I believe it is the coolant reservoir, relocated slightly higher and forward from its position in the road car's engine bay.
3, Were those plugs supposed to go directly to the cockpit?
Yes, pass through connections.
4,[EDIT]: Forgot this, were the vents on the front cover perforated ? On my base model those are not:
Yes - there would have been mesh screens where the slots are to remove turbulent air from the wheel arches and have it flow over the top of the bodywork.

Note: I snipped your duplicate post in the GTR livery thread. Please keep in mind this forum doesn't move all that swiftly and there are a very limited number of people who can assist with some of the obscure requests for detail you have so you may need to be a little patient at times. Duplicating the same post in another thread isn't likely to improve your chances at getting an answer here. All of us are fairly tuned in to each post that is made.

I went up to this years Dove House meet, partly in anticipation of seeing #16R but mostly as my son wanted to go to a car meet this weekend. So 200+ miles and a total of 7 hours later, there was no #16R but we both had a blast, catching an Enzo, some lovely 964's and a mean flatnose Martini-liveried 911.
#16R (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/member.php?u=655904) is she still in your custody? :)
