engine trouble

I have a 96 saturn sw2. I start it and tap the gas in neutral and it boggs down and dies. then when i start it back up it spews white smoke for a couple seconds. If i drive down a highway and come to a stop sign it boggs out and stalls. please help

Initial tohughts: Sounds like it might be the EGR valve sticking open. I believe the 96 has a 4 wire electronic EGR valve (as opposed to the vaccum style EGR valve). It can easily be taken off(2 - 10 mil bolts I believe) and cleaned, both the valve and the port. Though you will need a new gasket for it.
If that does not work you can get one at the scrap yard for a few bucks.... or auto store for around $100.
