Have an 01 Windstar that had starting problems. Alternator tested bad so replaced it and batt. ( stock batt. figured it was due ) anyway now the van dies while driving. Speed and miles driven vary when it dies. So changed fuel filter, pump, jumped out fuel safety kill switch swapped fuel pump relay, checked IAC with meter. Anyone have idea what it could be? P.S. After the van dies I put it in neutral and try to re start and it cranks but wont start, but if you turn the key off and re start it starts every time? Thanks

When it dies, do you still got lights + battery?

I'm wondering if something is causing loss of power to the fuel pump.
You did not mention fuel filter, has it been changed?
IAC should not cause the vehicle to die while driving and then not start.
I normally will cause the vehicle to stall when you remove your foot from the accellerator.
Another thing to check would be the coil pack as those tend to fail on years around yours.

Yes I changed the fuel filter before changing pump. Will check coil pack and let you know how it goes. Thanks for the help.

Have your catalytic converters checked, a plugged cat will chock your engine out.

Read post from J.C. Robbins who had the exact same prob. and has replaced all the same parts with no luck, posted on 10/4. After the money I have put into this ...........van it might be a week before trying but will post whether it solves my prob. or not. Thanks for all the help.

Hi. I have a 2002 that had the same problem. Started with the alternator dieing then this problem came up after. It's your powertrain control module (computer) that needs to be replaced. When the alternator died it must have fried the computer. Once I replaced it the problem went away. I also replaced all the other stuff that you did before figuring this out. Spent almost 3000 dollars and it all started with a dead alternator. I was able to find a used one for a decent price. Once it's replaced though, your keys have to be coded to the new computer or you won't be able to start the van. Hope this helps.

Does the vehicle stumble a bit before it cuts out? Is is always at lower speeds like backing out of your driveway or at a light or ramp? Is there any kind of squealing noise from the engine?
My van never stalled or died out until I started having problems with the cam sensor and synchro.
After replacement van runs great.
I also had NO check engine lights or codes displayed when I was having these problems.
