My AC needs recharging. Does our car use the old type of freon or the newer kind?

Use R12 if you can find a dodgy mobile aircon guy. What they do is collate R12 from older cars in scrappies and use that to charge your car.

WRONG.
r12 only cools better if properly charged, and most of the systems are really old. My r134a civic gets WAY colder than my moms r12 91 accord. Also, the only advantage to r12 is it gets colder quicker right when you turn on the a/c while r134a takes a little while. Other than that r134a is way more efficent.
