AWESOME....I had seen this car for sale...its SCCA GT-1 right? Looks great. I hope that you might know where I can get a set or two of those fender flares????
Would love to find out what else was done. I am sure the chassis has been strengthened or something.

I think the fender flares were custom made. I have some spares and I need to use one or two as I crunched a jetta that spun in front of me yesterday. Let me see how hard it is to get some made and I will get them to you at cost. The car is about 12" wider than a stock Panoz and barely fits in a trailer. It has a 615 hp all aluminum v8. Trex 4 speed, custom driveshaft and reinforced rear frame to handle the power. It handles incredibly well and has nice power to boot. Won the first race I entered and will run it again in another ten days after fixing all of the front end damage!

It has a 402 cubic inch alll aluminum v8 putting out 615 hp. The engine is now 5 years old and really pulls well. The car is is 88" wide in the rear and about 86" wide in the front. How was the 6" per side track widening achieved? Is it solely due to the offset of the wheels used or have the suspension arms been lengthened & diff widened?

I have an ATC trailer and it clears with 1/4" on each side. You need a winch to haul it up otherwise you are not getting out! I attached the specs of the wheels where I beleive most of the width is made up.

2670 lbs dryVery nice improvements all around Aromocki and please put me on the list for information on the flares. I'm quite interested in how you got the weight down this far. I haven't weighed mine, but I'm sure it's going to weigh in somewhere close to 3K and I really don't know where I'd start to find 250-300 to remove.

Mine is 2775 so I am also curious about the 105lbs. I have to go. I was thinking the roof/windshield might need to go.

I can post for you if you like. I am at [email protected]. I think I will post a new thread for the flares and see what the interest is. The suspension is stock and the width was acheived with wheel offsets.
I made my friend two sets of flares for his Panoz that I will be picking up tomorrow and made myself two sets as well. My cost for the flares is $125 CDN per flare and I am happy to pass that along to you as long as you cover my shipping costs.
My car should be able to dance with a 2011 Cup Car next year:)

I have driven this car. It is fast. I have driven several Panoz GTS's. This car is SCCA SP. It is not a GT1 car. GT1 is front engine. This car, as you all know is front mid engine.
Vary well put together. It took several years to develop. It has only a few hrs on it sine 2007 or before?
Good for 1.32s at Laguna seca by a skilled driver.
Take car of that beast!

Dan,
Thanks for your info. I dont understand the American class designations well at all. I did find this online where it is a GT-1 catagory and the previous owner was competing and leading in it, but this must be some bizarre category as the points are as of 2001 and I beleive none of the mods were made until 2005 - 2006?? Jim Thompson was the previous owner.
Could someone please shed light on this GT-1 category as I thought GT-1 was where the big boys played??

2001 SCCA did not know what to do with us so they put us in GT1. We asked for our own class, GTP. We were told if averaged 7 cars all year they would give us our own class. After we meet there requirement they gave us the GTP class but added, we must maintain the 7 car average. So, we lost the GTP class the next year. While this was going on Panoz Auto was working with SCCA to allow us into GT2. Now and for the last few years SCCA has the GTS in GT2 as a National class.
Note the rules from SCCA,
Panoz GTS must be to Panoz spec.
Jim Thomson started to build his car before the GT2 class was granted to us. So he found that SP was the correct class for his car.
You would have to look at the GT1 rules on line but I think GT1 calls for 15” wheels, front engine as well as a lone list of other requirements.
Panoz allows for some electronic add on's but no performance mod's.
This would include any change to the engine, engine cooling, transmission mods, and rear end mods other than Panoz options. Etc,
There are a lot of cars that have been modified. If you are looking at buying a GTS you should look at the car carefully for any mod; s that would make that car non compliant to a given series.

Just for comparison I do 1:37s at Laguna in a "stock" GTS. 1:41s in my GTRA. A well driven "amature" Porsche GT3 Cup car will do low 1:30s with many in the mid 1:30s.....so that is a pretty fast Panoz.
I would guess that a true "pro driver" could get a stock GTS to do 1:33-34's at Laguna. I don't have alot of seat time there.
BTW we did get the GTP (GT-Panoz) class back regionally this year in NorCal SCCA as a regional class only that is open to any Panoz that meets tech and isn't modified beyond a GTS so the GTRAs can run SCCA in Group 1, while the GTS are legal in groups 1 and 3 (GT2). Helps to make it more fun in 2 run groups.

Kevin,
1:37's is a good time in a stock GTS.
The best I've seen was 1:35xx by a guy from Washington. He and another GTS driver were running 1:35xx and 1:36xx.
My best was 1:38 flat. I was just getting to know how to set the car up after rebuilding the suspension, but, I sold the car to a guy that wanted to go faster than he was. He's still working on that.

Is a bone stock GTS even competitive in GT2?
Yes and no..... Let me put this in perspective at our local NorCal track Thunderhill my stock GTS does 1:55s with a "pro driver" and with some more seat time he could likely do 1:54s. My PBL there is a 1:57 and many of the other Panoz are running right around 2:00 flat.
The track record for GT2 SCCA is 1:54 in a 996 GT3 Cup car that was very well driven. Note the 997 GT3s are in GT1 as are the Vipers. The fastest GT2 cars tend to be the Porsches which are few and far between and Tube frame Mazda RX7s which depending on motor can run GT2 or GT3 (faster).
So you can be competitive depending on your skill and who shows up. To take on the Porsches we really need some more development (500hp, diffusers etc) and it would be a good fight.
A Panoz has one the GT2 regional championship every year that I can remember, but this has alot to do with making it to all the races, too.
Dan is correct that the current GT2 GTS isn't competitive on a National level in SCCA even with very good drivers. We need (likely will never get since Joel is gone at PAD) upgrades. The other cars are just too fast and well driven on a Nationals level.

At the National level, Panoz will not win. The same two drivers I mentioned above finished 10th and 11th.
Back in 2002 or 2003 a Panoz won the SFR GT1 Championship. This was before we were put into GTP and then GT2 class.
You've got to finish to win!

Thanks for the info on the rules. GT-1 permits the use of 16" wheels and I beleive Jim built this car to run in GT-1 otherwise he wouldnt have bothered with the engine upgrade and the downsizing of the rims. I will likely on race GT-1 at my home track in Ontario if I am eligible for it and see how I stack up against the big boys. With luck I will be able to make my car eligible and will likely take a thumping at my home track!

I don't think much has been done to that car since I last drove it. If that is so, I suggest you look at a few things I thought needed attention.
Front Hymen joints, upper control arm bushings, lower mono ball (?). Maybe shock rebuild.
What I noticed was the car was unsettled under hard braking. It sort of wiggles.
There should not be play in these components.

I'd only replace the "hymen" joints in a virgin..... Couldn't resist.
We have a 1-2 yr cycle to replace all the suspension parts (hyme joints, spindles, shock rebuild, BJs etc) amazing how fast the joints wear out and slight slop causes major handling issues. You don't ever want to break a spindle too.... They are good only for a couple of years at best in a raced car. If PAD is out they are stocked by Coleman. Good hyme joints are about $75 each and you need lots of them!

When we had the car refreshed over the winter between 2008-2009 pretty much every heim-joint was replaced. The difference was very noticable. On side-beneift is the car stopped creaking and clanking like it was going to fall apart when driving around the pits.

Thats too funny as you are 100% correct. All the heims and bushings were shot when I first drove the car. All the wheel bearings were shot, the brake bias was seized and one tire had 3/8" to out.
The car was also very darty and we tried 1/8" toe out, 1/16" to out, 0 toe out and now we have toe in and it handles awesome. I think its lowered and the wider track causes it to go toe out on the corners.
I am racing with another gentlemen called Elmer that is racing a Transam Car and I think he knows you as well??

Elmer is doing 1:23s at Mosport, so he is FAST. My best time is a 1:27.11 so far. Hopefully next year I can give him something to think about.

Hopefully, that is Elmer Shannon. He's one of the nicest guys you will encounter in racing. True sportsman and gentlemen. He dominated SCCA in his blue tube frame Corvette. Blisteringly fast and well driven. He's currently running Trans Am with it. My guess is that is about a $200k Vette.
Learn from him!

Got a picture of the car? I am at the petit watching the imsa lites races and trans-am ran today too. Fast TA1 cars (GT1)
Did you know that Trans-Am just allowed GT2, GTA, and GT3 race cars into the show?

Eric, FYI I saw this place advertised on one of those car shows. Apparently they target racing applications...
