Yes I did, but not much to share yet...

I put some engine parts together...

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e14/phil67c/Suzuki%20Katana/Katana_003.jpg

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e14/phil67c/Suzuki%20Katana/Katana_001.jpg

...and drilled holes where frame and engine will join together.

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e14/phil67c/Suzuki%20Katana/Katana_002.jpg

I plan to build a new complete frame, but this may be a bit too much ambitious for my first bike... :runaround:
Still not completely sure of what this bike will become BTW... :eek7:

Well, rules say "Katana group build" but also say "no rules" :sly:
so this surely doesn't mean one have to absolutely build a Katana, but something starting from Katana kit...!!
So let see where inspiration send me to

Hi again, a little progress, but slow.
Improvements that were a few, had grown to a endless list, i feel that this will be a long long project.
Pics of previous fit:
http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx189/docquino/Katana%20progress/IMGP3426.jpg
http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx189/docquino/Katana%20progress/IMGP3424.jpg
http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx189/docquino/Katana%20progress/IMGP3423.jpg

List of changes to be done:

Wheels from a NR 750, but wired, I´ll probably keep discs and front fender (but chop it).
Front cowl doesn accept NR´s fork, so I´ll wide it and install a double squared headligth,, and cowl will be one piece with the tank, changing subtly its curves. Change tank tap. A new high style handlebar will be installed.
As fork lowers the overall heigh, a rear suspension frame with added arm and a bit higher. Keep rear suspension.
Copped chassis to admit a shortened seat (like Cratecruncher one). The seat will be one piece with side and knee panels, all in neoprene-fabric style and finished with a 2 round rear ligth
It will be probably no mirrors, turn ligths and rear fender, a real chopper, but.....
Pics are bad and but ....
No new members to the thread?

There will be a minimalist mudguard at the end, supporting turn ligths (from NR 750) and rear plñate, not designed yet.

Hey Docq, great job, those is less or more the set up that anyone of us wish...

http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx189/docquino/Katana%20progress/IMGP3426.jpg (http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx189/docquino/Katana%20progress/IMGP3426.jpg)

@Cinq: I try ever to avoid those experiences, despite I'm not a kid... looks strange to see what the human was able to think and do to other brothers, looks comic (ok crazy..) to see that often was the church to do it

Looks like we're quite lucky living in this time uh? Most of us haven't quite easy lifes, but at last if we have a bit of spare time for the stuff we likes.... by our perspective the life don't look so bad :D

I want write "I want to see more" but since I just do a dry fit test.... I can't :D

BTW: one thing, may be I asked yet, anyone tried to seam Hiroboy's soft steel pipes? My idea was to build the 4>1 exaust with burned (really burned, not painted) pipes.... some experience? I seen that they aren't so soft like it is supposed, but I think the job may be done...

So true Gio! I only went in because there was some armour near the entrance (I assumed it was a weapons collection?!) Being a metal conservator I have to check these things out! It amazes me just how inventive the human mind can be when it comes to being horrible to each other. So glad we live in modern times too and yes the church has a lot to answer for, but I'm not going down that route on here! LOL! ;-)

As you see its getting closer to the target
http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx189/docquino/6236343561303136.jpg
But gradually some changes were done to do the bike less a saloonbike and more a modern cafe-racer. It was intended to be all black, but I think is better to retain the original colour scheme, keeping it all silver-black, as if would be a reissue of the original katana (same concept than new mini or new beetle, an easy recognize but all new bike). Muffler will be probably a old style cone in right side, and changed idea of high handlebars to downside ones again.
Wired wheels were planned to be aluminium-chromed, but I wonder about keeping them black too, what do you think about wheels and keeping the original colour scheme?.

Your Kat is coming along nicely. I agree there should be some legacy that ties back to the previous generation or it loses identity; perhaps one reason that Corvette is still around and Rx-7 only a fading memory.

Those wheels turned out quite nice. I especially like the tiny tensioners on the spokes. I'm curious where you came across that brass tubing?

I used this stuff, bougth from ebay, several diameters available. Its easyer to work with than the wire supplied with gunze´s kits (steel) as its brass, but the colour changes so must be painted and cant be used in natural colour unless you want brass colour. Each packet has 80 cm of brass in 6 pieces (4-15 cm and 2-10 cm), so you need aprox one for each wheel. The tensioner were made from brass too (I dont remember exactly if this one) with outer 0,5 diam. and inner 0,33 diam, so they fit exactly. Rigid enougth to keep wheel structure and glued with normal CA glue (best and cleaner if done from outer side)
The stuff http://cgi.ebay.es/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270549465966&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT (http://cgi.ebay.es/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270549465966&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT)
Once tried, i´ll use in future projects, as 2 dukes I have in mind.... a yellow 750 ss and a green-silver 900 perhaps...?

Pushhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh up! Time to resume this workshop!

Well I canged my plans. In the ITA forum we're doing a shared thread also, around cafè racers: I didn't imagine a better thing than... to do a cafè katana..... so I'll join to both the group with half efforts LOL!!!!

So following all updates of my 刀 紅茶

Mmm, my english never been decent, but seems rust now... I need spell's polish! Pay patient, hopefully images would be self-explanatory, and ask in case...

Before all, I needed a plan... I got something in mind, but I needed to rend my ideas without lost much time... So I tried with clay...

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/varie/DSC_0849.jpg

Idea was not bad to me: complex shapes flushing free over the 3 dimensions without limitations

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/varie/DSC_0850.jpg

Problem was......switch from clay to something strong enough to be painted...

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/varie/DSC_0851.jpg

Great: I decided for the "old school modeling", annoyed enough by the 3D digital works ;)

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/DSC_0275.jpg

A few news: deadline of the ita cafè racers contest is coming so.....neeed to rush...

My idea about the fuel tank was about a polished alluminium artigianal tank: after some attempt usign BMF and other ways, and after million steps of primer>paper I get it just polishing at die the grey primer until the 12K mesh and spraying a couple thin layers of chrome: I'm curious to see the result on glossy white also... but would be on the next custom....
Frame is updated with new shocks and pedals mounts, engine is just dryfitted: since I revolutioned the mounting steps in order to achieve a full frame I have to glue the engine later...

Wow Gio...it just gets better and better! Seeing your Alpine Renault WIP pop up again this week shows just how your lathe skills have jumped 1000% in a few years. Your photo-etch set is also amazing - must pull my finger out and have a go at this process soon! ;-)

To do custom PE is tedious, quite tediosu: if you will find something ready you'll sure buy (and it would million times be cheaper) but when the result is good... well all efforts are paid.

Bad news: after some week I felt something strange in my katty's fuel tank: some of the plastic rib used to shape up the 2K putty started to be slightly recognizable... I started to imagine how it would looks one year later..... time for drastic solutions...

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/DSC_0453.jpg

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/DSC_0461.jpg

But good news also.... back end is almost finished

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/DSC_0455.jpg

With the engine mounted I'll start to look around for find a decent exaust solution: the original idea was about a 4-in-1 with racing end... but I wanted to walk on the cafè racer path so...

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/DSC_0463.jpg

I'm feeling troubles with the resin clone: cast is perfect but may be the weather or the old resin... wel I have a couple little points where the primer wouldn't stich to the resin (all washed with toluene and sanded everywhere...) ... hopefully I'll find a solution...

Great work Gio! I just discovered this thread is active again. I love what you're doing to that Kat. Can't wait to see what else you plan to do.

Nice work Gio, leather tank could really look nice, I was just thinking and looking at some caffe racers pictures, usualy they are twin cylinder machines, with many solutions for exhaust. I don't know what you have in mind for that under seat triangal, but I am just thinking, would it be possible to raise the pipes to something like this
http://static.blogo.it/motoblog/the-bomb-runner-by-rough-crafts/BombRunner_02.jpg
maybe not, but it was my first idea when I saw that triangal hole...any how, great work, can't wait for more

Thanks guys. Sasa this is a cool idea for chopper/bobbers/board trackers etc but it born by the V design of the Harley twin. I have a 4L aircooled engine.... the exaust layout is a bit forced by its design.... by the begin I ever thought I would usa a 4-in-1 sporty exaust.... but it is a "iconic" thing for the old school cafè racers (triumph as well as honda cb) shows a good couple of old school silencers... I tried to redesign 'em a bit ;)

Let me introduce Mr. Lightweight Lic. Plate Mount and Mrs. Tailight. Cable would be replaced.

That number plate looks very cool G!

Regarding the exhaust, an old school trick was to turn the cylinders around, so that the carbs were at the front and the exhausts at the back. It would look neat, but you need rake on the front forks to clear the carbs...fine on a stretched chopper!

Wouldn't mind taking that one for a ride, if the size was compatible with me.
One heck of a build and a stunning design you pulled off! Love all the details, overall look and stance.

Fantastic work here, too late for me to join the build part, but I recently finished Tamiya's 1/6 and 1/12 Suzuki Katana's.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w13/Hunter777_photos/DSCF0459.jpg

Starting on their 1/6 Kawasaki Z1300 in the background then I have their 1/6 CB1100R to do and I'll probably get the 1/12 one to do side by side as I have with the Kats :naughty:

That looks very inspiring.

I have the 1/12 Tamiya Katana custom tuned and also a Yam R1 donor bike that I will be using for wheels, forks swing arm, will be keeping the front part of the seat like you as well as fairing and petrol tank but changing the tail part.

I like the look of the exhausts, was going to use the Custom tuned 4 into 1 with a different end can, but I like the look of stubby twin exhausts.

Keep us posted on your progress please, great work so far.
