I just had my head gaskets changed on my 2008 Impala 3.9 with 69,000 miles. I know they used to have a problem with this engine. Is this a once and done or can I expect this again? All my miles are highway and I use nothing but Mobil 1 with a change every 8,000 mile. This was very unexpected. I usually keep cars 4 years and have 140,000 trouble free miles. This is a first.

I have an 06 LT 3.9L. I had the head gaskets done at about 48k miles. I haven't had a bit of trouble since. The only thing I notice is that my average fuel mileage dropped from about 24mpg to 19mpg.

Reason the Head Gaskets mostly go early is due to the dex cool they were using early on. The type of oil used over time will not determine head gasket life what will is how often you condition your cooling system for your engine. I would keep in eye on the coolant coloring and service it season to season.
