Ignition Coil Wont Fire

I have a 2001 SL. One of the Ignition coils fires up and the other does not! I replaced the Ig. Coil twice and it did not work. What else could it possibly be? I am thinking it could be the module or possibley the computer.

(Also it has been sitting here all winter because I thought the transmission was clunking out. Maybe it has something to do with the coil though?? It was running but it would jerk like something was wrong with the trans.)

Okay well I hope its something simple. I really need to get it fixed here soon. I cant afford to take it to shop, I have someone to repair it for me already, but need to know what part to get first. I also dont have the money to just take a wild guess. So I was hoping someone who knew more would have an idea of whats going on. I very greatly appreciate anyone who takes the time to help me & give their opinion. Thanks so much!

If one coil is firing, its likely everything up to the module or igniter under the coils is okay. One thing to try first would be to swap the coils -left for right-, and see if the one that works now still works when placed in the other 'socket', and if the 'non-working' coil still wont work when in the other side of the module underneath the coils. Also try undoing the connector where the wiring harness plugs into the module below the coils, and re-connecting it.
I see ignition control modules at www.rockauto.com for prices ranging from $59 (plus shipping) up to $220. (click to select your make, year, model, then click on the 'ignition' choice).
I imagine if you go to a junkyard you could buy one for well under half that much. If you went to a pick-n-pull or u-pull-it and took the tool you need with you, it might cost closer to $10 or $20. I dont think they are a high failure item, so one from a junkyard might be fine. I would never recommend getting an engine coolant temp sensor for instance, because they ARE a high failure rate item.

I have ordered a couple of thousand dollar worth of parts from www.rockauto.com. They have never let me down.

We have a 92 SL2 in the family that shudders when trying to accelerate from low speeds. The problem goes away if we leave the tranny in 3rd gear instead of in 4th gear. Once we get onto the highway and are going over 45-50mph we put it in 4th. No shuddering at the higher speeds.

Hi Sorry for the delay. My dad did all those things to test it and it really does seem that is the problem. The auto store said they could test it, yet when we brought it they didn't have the right end to hook it up. But the worker seemed to know his stuff and agreed that the coil modulator was the problem. So I went ahead and got it. I haven't gotten it installed yet. I will let you know if it works or not! Thanks so much denisond3! You are awesome!!
