waterpump studs - thread open to engine? 3,8/96

To install the waterpump stud 1 (whatever that is - there is another thread here about this) the thread should be treated with sealant. Obviously it has a connection to somewhere inside the engine.

Does anyone know more precisely if and what stud is making a connection to the inside of the engine and if to what (cooling or oil)? Half of the bolts/studs are corroded - I wonder if that was creeping through the gasket or coming from inside:confused:

Seems to be the one at 9 o-clock. It is the only with a lot of oily smut in there - the rest simply rusted.

I have not replaced a water pump.
I looked up the water pump job on Alldatadiy.
You used to be able to get much the same information on this job for FREE through the AutoZone website.
AutoZone owns Alldatadiy.
Take NOTE that the diagrams are UPSIDE DOWN as compared to the motor.
You can tell by the fact that the oil filter mounting location is above the water pump in the diagrams.
The big tube on the water pump that points up at the 11 oclock position.......is the lower radiator hose connection point.....which points down at around 5 oclock on the motor in the vehicle.

They say to put the teflon sealant on the #1 stud (they don't seem to identify which one it is in the diagrams or instructions).
They say to coat all the bolt and stud threads with oil.....except the one(s) that get the sealant.

All the BOLTS for the water pump are tightened to 20-30 N-m (15-20 lb-ft)
All the NUTS get tightened to 8-12 N-m (71-106 lb-in) NOTE Inch pounds......NOT ft-lb

I am sure that someone who has done this job can offer more help.

I got very lucky.....original pump on my '96 at over 220K miles.

For coolant.....it came from the factory with Green Coolant......I would recommend you take the time to get that........or.....if you want......you could convert to G-05.
I would not use the yellow jug of Prestone "all makes all models" as it is NOT the same.......and will not provide the OEM specified protection.

G-05 is Motorcraft GOLD......or is also sold under the Zerex brand (Carquest and some Napa stores).
If it does not clearly state that it IS G-05 (not "compatable with"), it is NOT G-05.

Green is also available under the Motorcraft brand.....as well as Zerex and a couple other brands......it will clearly state on the label that it is the Green style.

Thanks a lot - a got the original Ford Service Manual along with Haynes. The point is, they give advise about the sealant, however not WHY - which however would be a crucial point of knowing to do the job right. Obviously the inner threads in question are wetted from oil or water - one may be dried out, the other stays and that would mean, that there should no sealant do the job on an oil-film.
Keeping this in mind the only bolt that was oily was the last one to the passanger cabin (9 o-clock), all other stick (because partly rusted) which means either the sealant is intact or - because of rust - they are connected to the cooling which should not be an issue.
So I cleaned the threads and used on the oily one an ordinary teflon-band (like used for fitting waterpipes).
Let me hope, it will do the job.
