Volkswagen T3 Westfalia w/ high roof

Hello,

this time it's only a quick WIP, due to time limitations. I build this camper for a colleague of mine who owned one in the 80's and loved it. He retired last week and I will hand it over to him on the official farewell party on the 14th of December. This means I have to hurry up to get it finished in time.

I started with the Revell kit you all know. This build is based on the re-issue of the kit, but nonetheless I show the original box:

I'm not going to take pictures of every single step, because there is not enough time left. What happened so far:

*putty* *shape* *putty* *shape*

there will also be a little trailer...

Waiting for your comments...

Looks interesting, compared to reference photos I think the window in the roof is too small and the side panels are too thick.

Sounds like some more pre-christmas-stress ;-))

Looks like a long build for me that is, goodluck. Im with micha, the window is a little small, but the overall shape and quality is excellent.

Re: Volkswagen T3 Westfalia w/ high roof

That's a cool project. I am pretty jealous right now.

Reminds me of my own T3.
If I only had your patience for all that *putty* *shape* *putty* *shape*-ing...

This was my result:

Maybe one day I will fix the gap between the car and the roof

Re: Volkswagen T3 Westfalia w/ high roof

Hello, thanks for the kind replies and criticism. Yes, the side panels are a bit too thick, but I'm not going to take them off again. No time, unfortunately.
The window appears to be a bit smallish, but should turn out OK once the surrounding rubber seal is painted flat black.

A few more progress pics. Fitted some carpeting in the living area and scattered a few bits and pieces for that "lived in" look.

Table mounted. Yeah... no navigation devices back in the 80's, just a good old map.

Allright, on to the next steps. Will post updates later...

Re: Volkswagen T3 Westfalia w/ high roof

Hi guys,

a quick update. Started the display base. It's going to be a Greek scenery. Just some archs, a bit of sand and a few sprinkles of green. Nothing fancy...

Cheers

That case looks expensive, is it a tamiya? Also are the maps and magz just minimized and printed on regular paper? Looks good, the person getting will be very happy with im sure.

Re: Volkswagen T3 Westfalia w/ high roof

*hurry*

on we go:

I quickly (under 1 hour!) build a little diorama in the showcase, not counting drying time which is happening right now as I post the pictures...

Take the following from a well sorted model railroad shop:

The Greek archs are from an aquarium shop. I taped the edges to ensure clean edges:

Applied Ponal (wood glue) and added the coarse gravel:

same with the fine gravel:

Driving over it with a die-cast model creates a nice track:

Remove tape

A quick check to see how it fits

Remove gravel from areas where stones will be - if you forgot to glue them on in advance

Glue stones with Ponal

Add coarse gravel...

... and play with the new cam while it's drying:

Allright, gotta move on...

Very nice

I love the idea of using the aquarium decorations as part of the dio! Presumably this is set in Atlantis....?

Re: Volkswagen T3 Westfalia w/ high roof

Hello, just a quick update.

I removed the side marker light because my colleague had a Euro version. I added the Westfalia stripes, vents and power supply covers.
If somebody is wondering: fenders and wheels of the little trailer are from the Tamiya Lotus 7.

I still have to add a decal on one side. Must have missed that yesterday
