1/12 Tamiya Porsche 935 with SMS detail set
After years of procrastination I've been convinced to start building this kit. Thanks Dwayne
Here's a very quick summary of my intentions for this build. I've got the Scale Motorsport detail set so of course I'll be adding that to it, but also the usual scratchbuilt details and my own turned and milled metal pieces. The idea is to replicate the car as if it has been raced therefore I'll use quite a bit of weathering as well. I also want to accurately replicate all the various surfaces of the car such as the fibreglass, cast metal, machined metal, weld seams and putty seams to name a few. I'll share some of my techniques with you as questions arise but I must thank Eric 'mach1_2003' for his great fibreglass technique which I have employed on a few of the parts. here's a link to his 'how to' thread for those who are interested. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...ght=Fiberglass Of course I've used a technique of my own for all the other parts which you can see later on. Anyway, I'm not a fan of words so here are some pictures of the progress so far. First the wheels and tyres ![]() ![]() ![]() The Engine ![]() ![]() ![]() Fuel Tank ![]() ![]() ![]() OK, I'm ready to answer any questions I hope you all like the progress so far. This is a BIG build so help keep me motivated and if anyone has extra pictures showing where all the wiring goes I'd be most appreciative

LOL glad i got you started on that kit was getting sick of seeing it laying on the floor lol. Hey what are friends for to mess with ya head on a build like this im impressed again with the qaulity of the build (again) and if you notice parts missing like well wheels motor etc it may just have fell into my car instead. i have alot of feedback from the guy's at our last model night and they were blown away with it.

Re: 1/12 Tamiya Porsche 935 with SMS detail set
I´m watching, you can bet on that. I´m always playing with the idea of making this one or the 934.
This looks very promising so far and I´m very curious what else you have up your sleeves. The texture you applied on the tank is already very realistic. Same with the detailing on the engine. All these small and bity parts - cool! Let´s see how we can keep you motivated. We should put this one on follow-up and PM the hell out of you! Cheers Robert

Re: 1/12 Tamiya Porsche 935 with SMS detail set
This is going to be mind-boggling or modeling porn as some would call it
!!!Tyres look superb, engine texture looks awesome (micro ballons or what was that stuff called?) and the tank looks just like the real one... sensational! |

I've been waiting on you to do this for quite a while now and it's looking awesome! I'm really looking forward to watching this build come to life.
As for ref pictures... I happened to get a lot of pictures of the sister car (Car #4) at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion in Daytona, Florida earlier this year. When I return from my business trip next week I'll see what I have and send them to you.

Re: 1/12 Tamiya Porsche 935 with SMS detail set
Thanks Guys!
First I'll answer a few questions: Quote:
As for the tank. I simply brush Lacquer thinners onto the bare plastic then mottle it into the surface with an old and stiff bristled brush. As the thinners dries out the plastic gets stringy and takes on the look you see. From there a series of washes highlights the surface. Quote:

![]() Just a quick update. I'm switching back and forwards between the various subassemblies so this thread will be all over the place with progress updates I cut the steering wheel apart for ease of painting. I wanted to replicate the stitched leather cover so after cleaning up the parts I made little 45 degree grooves on the inside of the wheel. I then made them at a 90 degree angle the other way. I used the mission models tool. ![]() ![]() After painting the wheel I thinned out some white paint and washed it through the grooves. Stitching done ![]() ![]() You'll hardly notice it when the kits complete but that's half the fun of doing these extra little bits. More soon.

Words fail me . . . . that steering wheel is incredible!! These little details you gurus come up with make me contemplate selling the whole stash and taking up basket weaving instead. |
