OIL on Spark Plugs. Its that bad?

OK. This goes to George especially.

I exchanged the BKR6E-11's today for the BKR6E's. Tonight I decided to pull the Autolites out and replace them with the NGK's. All four Autolite plugs had what seemed to be fresh oil sitting on the threads. The electrode and tip are clean and dry, but the oil is on the threaded part.

I do not believe this to be an issue and feel that it might have something to do with the superbly built Autolite plugs that I had in there.

Anyhow, just to make me feel good about this, please let me know that it was because the Autolites SUCK! and I should have had the NGK's in there in the first place. And that it had something to do with the amount of spark generating from the plug was not great enough or the plug was not getting hot enough or something like that.

By the way, the car idles beautifully now and acceleration seems smoother. What was I thinking when I bought the Autolites you ask? I have no fukn' clue.

Was it just on the threads, or was it on the electrode and insulator as well?

The insulator and electrode were dry and clean. Only on the threads near where it would seat against the block.

There was no oil in the 4 plug canals or near the rocker cover gasket. So that's good.

That's strange, but I have seen that before. I've ignored it.

It may be that you have some oil seeping from somewhere, but if so, then the engine is totally burning it.

Install the new plugs and pull them after about 500 or 1,000 miles and see how they look I guess.

OK. Here is what I just found out. Did some research on the Autolites. Damn idiots at the auto parts store. But then again I trusted them to give me the right stuff. So Damn me too!

The Autolites that were given to me and I installed the car were Part # 3923. All websites even Autolites site shows the part # 3924 NOT 3923. I was given the wrong freakin' plugs. They have been in there since I installed the '91 intake cam a few months ago.

Argh! I feel like finding that guy and.....

I will assume that the oil on the plugs came from not sparking properly due to wrong spark plug!

George, thanks. I'll check them in about 500-1000 miles and see what happens.

Speaking of that...whats the correct torque for the plugs to go back in? And what plugs would you recommend?

If the torque isnt exact, will that affect your performance?

I can answer you there now that I have more to go on.

Go here:

As for torque, I can not recall, but believe it to be 18-24 lb/ft.

George, can you help out there!
