WIP - Ferrari 330 Testa Rossa

The first of what I hope to be many.
The glorious Ferari 330 Testa Rossa; the last Testa Rossa racing car.

Medium = Acrylic on board.

First things first, the surface.
I didn't have time to go and prepare a proper canvas so I went back to my old scavenging habits and cut up a big bit of board that I had laying around. It's approximately 14"x24" and the surface is marked up like crazy because I had used it as a cutting surface previously.

Laid down a decent enough layer of titanium white for opacity, and for some texture to the surface. I had two boards like this one and this one I laid the paint diagonally because the planned painting on this one will be a normal horizontal one.
The one I'm painting on (didn't photo that one) had a base laid horizontally and vertically.

Not terribly exciting but I felt like documenting everything.

Time = 10 minutes.
As of now, have just blocked in the rough shape of the car and played with some reds on the surface just because I've never painted something so... red before. Also my paint's maybe 8 years old now and some of them have turned into plastic so I'm having to improvise a bit. The only colours used so far are cadmium red, napthonal red, ultramarine and burnt umber. Yellow ocre (or it might've been raw ocre... label's disintegrated) was used to part block in the background.

things that are wrong with it:
rear arch is wrong.
the peak should be in line with the centre of the wheel. This in turn has put the cockpit too far forward.
Body is too short by about a foot.

In short, the car should be longer and not as tall.

More to follow.

Re: Ferrari 330 Testa Rossa

Time = 2 hours.

Spent much time fixing the general shape and defining the forms better.
After the initial blocking out in colour, I find it best to define the sharpest lines; usually the black areas and the areas of most flat colour which is usually going to be the mid tone.

Shape of the car still needs to be tweaked here and there but that'll come when I get to filling in the ground, touching up the background etc etc but my greens are useless so I'll have to go get some more paint. Nose still might be a bit too short though, especially considering it's V12 up there.

Re: Ferrari 330 Testa Rossa

we don't usully see people here who are brave enough to use paint. i am one of those people who stay away from paint just because it SEEMS too difficult. but i have to admit you inspire me to start painting. maybe if i have time after i finish the F50. anyway, back to you ... very nice so far. i have to admit some details are still a bit weird looking but it is probably too early to judge that and the overall body shape seems ok to me.

Re: Ferrari 330 Testa Rossa

I like paint; it feels more "alive" when you use it and it's refreshing not to be in 100% control of what happens (unless you end up drawing with paint)

Anyway.
if there's anything not right, let me know.
As it is, the tail is wrong and the body isn't straight enough and as said before, I've got to check the length of the nose/main body.

Back later to show todays hour's fixing.
