98 3.8 stalls when put in gear

Ok, so I had a used trans installed a few months ago. From a 98 with 84K on it. Everything worked fine up until a few days ago.

As soon as you put the van in gear it stalls. Not really an engine stall, but more like how a standard trans stalls when you let out the clutch wrong.

Make sense?

I can get it to go by shifting it manually by starting out in 1 and then shifting up and then back down when stopping. If I come to a stop without down shifting, it will start jerking bad at about 10 mph and then stall at 5 mph or so.
Reverse is horrible, only by feathering the gas really quickly will it even attempt to move without stalling, and even then, I might get it going 1 out of 5 times.

No MIL and no codes present.

I am sure it has to be trans related, right?

TCC? If so, how involved is it to change? I read a few posts and it seems like it may be a tight fit but it seems to be able to be done in the frame without dropping the trans, can it be done in the frame?

Thanks.

Re: 98 3.8 stalls when put in gear

I have a 96 with the same problem. We found out that we can change gears perfectly while the wheels and calipers are off but as soon as the calipers touch it starts stalling when put into drive or reverse. We had the codes checked using 2 different scanners but nothing came up at all. We have no service engine lights lit up either. We checked the EGR, IAC, vacuum hoses, transmission range sensor, and replaced the torque converter clutch solenoid. We still haven't found the problem yet. They might be a few places to start looking for a possible cause...other than that I'm stumped.

Good luck!

Re: 98 3.8 stalls when put in gear

Itīs an known problem of the forward Clutch wave spring. It breaks to peaces and even the parts of that spring overlaps. So - ther is concentrated load on the clutch - it slips.

It leads to problems in first and reverse. If U start in position 2 - forward wors.

Here is a picture of an broken FW-CLUTCH-WAVE-SPRING:

Re: 98 3.8 stalls when put in gear

may or may not be related, but my wife had a car (olds) that did the same thing, turns out the trans cooler inside the radiator got a hole in it and allowed radiator fluid (coolant) to get inside the trans which pretty much destroyed it, but it had the same symptoms your describing. Like a manual w/o using the clutch.....just another avenue to check. Check the trans dipstick to see if there's tranny fluid in it....or something else....
