AMT Possibly for sale!!!

here's a .pdf file of the announcement of RC2 to stop selling AMT kits.

http://rc2.com/investor/financial/20...elim_Q4_06.pdf

This could be a good thing though, maybe someone will buy them who actually cares about the hobby and wants the AMT name to be respected again, RC2 has almost ruined AMT, bringing out kits with parts on the box that arent in the kit, and giving us just absolutely horrible kits, (F&F Eclipse comes to mind)

I vote that Dave Burkett and John Mueller should take over AMT immediately!

Re: AMT Possibly for sale!!!

ERTL had the problem with packaging representation and mixed up parts when they first moved part of the operation to Mexico. The Chinese were doing all the box art from what I heard, so things got lost in translation. Plus you're no longer dealing with US born motorheads and a lot of key RC2 people were let go a few years back.

So far I've heard of no timeline of events, but they're not going to be making any new investments past products that they are currently contracted to build. I'm sure some sort of attempt will be made to keep the doors open for a reasonable time period, as a working business is more attractive to a buyer than an idle one that had to be resurrected.

The whole dark side of the deal is that if the business is NOT sold by a certain date, it may be liquidated for scrap and salvage. If you have no buyer, what sense does it make to pay the shipping costs of the molds and other equipment back to the states?

Well, zinc prices have increased. How the hell does this affects plastic kits? Or did I miss something?

The press release also mentions diecasts which use zinc as a primary component of the metal used. This explains part of the reason for phasing out some of their collectible lines. On top of that the increase in global oil prices affects the cost of plastic as it is a primary component.
