Question Aerostar 2WD tranny probs

This is a pain.... I have a 93 Aerostar that started leaking tranny fluid. A friend who is a mechanic (not a transmission guy) offered to take it out and change the seals. When he took it out he said the torque converter was stuck. (transmission still worked ok) I took it to another friend who got the TC off and it turned out that the seals weren't bad. It was the thin bushing that the TC rides inside. We replaced it and the seals but I had to get anew TC cause it had grooves in it. ANyway, the original guy put the van back together with the new TC, but now it's not working at all. After questioning around, someone said that if the output shaft had been put in backwards it would cause that exact problem. Does anyone know if this is true?.... cause the inside of the tranny was not damaged and it was working fine other than the leaking.....
