2000 Alero Stalls V6

My Alero just started doing this, actually it's the first time. It was running fine then just quit. If it sat for awhile ,it would start for a few seconds then stall again. After that it will only crank. It has about 80K on it ,and up until now ran just fine. I was running in cruise when it quit, if that makes any difference. Any thoughts or suggestions? Fuel filter, or pump? Anything? Thanks, TomF

It sounds like it could possibly be your fuel pump. If your fuel pump was going, that could explain it, because it would stop functioning as it got hotter - causing the stalling. But then would work better as it cooled down.

I had it towed to a local service station yesterday. Of course they didn't check it yesterday, and this morning they said it started right up. They did change the fuel filter and told me to keep at least half tank of gas in it to see what it does. They drove it about 30 miles total and had no problems so now I'm just worried when it will hit again. I'm thinking of replacing the ignition module just to eliminate that possibility. Speaking from experience don't replace the inigtion yet. My 2000 Alero ran fine (179K miles) and I parked it then next AM would not start. Had a little problem w/ my key not turning in the ignition. Had a steady security light, SES light and little battery light on. Was told it was first the fuel pump or ignition. If you turn your car to the ON position and can hear the fuel pump hum (or engage) then it is not the fuel pump. If you have a spare key ( anew one made, not the original) then turn to the ON position leave on 10 mins/ then off 10 secs. (may have to try twice) I only had to try once. Then try to start the car. The computer was not accepting my factory keys due to being worn down. My car started right up. Took the car to Advance auto to have it checked for the SES light. And the sales rep reset my computer. This also illiminated my problem with the turn signals working whenever too. So FIRST try this before spending the big bucks at a service center. The local repairman was going to charge me $400 to tow car/replace fuel pump and that was not the problem! Good luck.

It probably was your fuel filter. Don't replace your Ignition module yet. My car did the same thing as yours, and the fuel filter fixed it.

It almost sounds like the tsp. is not re adjusting.

The computer has nothing to do with the physical key itself, but just the rotation of the key cylinder. The passlock sensor is built into the ignition cylinder not the key. A security system problem will not make it stall while driving but only on initial start up. If you had no problem with power then the likelyness of it being the fuel filter is slim. Sounds electrical to me. I would check the crank sensor wire harness down by the heater pipe tube where it should be secured to. I've seen them not in place and then the wire harness will burn through on the exhaust and cause intermittent stall and surge.This is located just in behind and under the throttle body. This will not set a code in your computer. Also check the battery positive terminal that the battery is not corrodded and at times could cause electrical noise to the computer and cause intermittent electrical problems. Good Luck!!!

I think it could be the tps. Mine was doing that the other day. When you start it up, it dies. its that black thing on top of your thrutlebody that is causing your prob. Thats what i think.
