WIP: Phantom Fairlane...PRO TOURING

ok. this will be a long agonizing build. I have, sitting in front of me an issue of popular hotrodding. And im staring at Charlie Libby's 1966 Fairlane. I picked the kit up on ebay a couple months ago. it is AMT's 66 fairlane GTA. there will be lots of scratchbuilding to update the suspension and the motor. I am going to follow the theme and ideas of pro touring as close as humanly possible in 1:24th. the The fairlane in the magazine, is simply going to be a guide, i will stray in the suspension, and im sure the engine. as mine will have some sort of fuel injected variant. I've got a pic of the front suspension and i will talk about the changes i plan to make. again this will be a long build, as i still have my Mustang Pro Mod and my '57 vette street rod to finish up. so please bare with me and stay tuned. hopefully will69camaro will pop in and leave some advice!

here are the pics. first will be the car of inspiration

http://www.lateral-g.net/libby/

i dont want to harvest the pictures, but that link will send you to a gallery

i'll start you off with the wheels. right now, im thinking about the wheels from the 99 cobra kit. will, kat, a little help with the 1:1 size? if i use them i will have to sleeve the rears so they are dished for some wider tires out back. i like the look of them with the body, but am open to suggestions, anything in the 17-18 range.

and now for the front suspension. all of it is coming off. right down to the crossmember for the engine. it will be replaced with a tubular one. im going to try my hand at scratchbuilding the suspension, and hopefully it will be functional, i think i've got it figured out. but if it doesn't work out, perry's resin has a real nice mustang 2 type suspension that i can use to modify.

as for the rear suspension, im thinking some sort of 3 link. not sure yet. anyone help with some pictures of pro-touring/g-machine, rear suspension set ups?

comments and criticism welcome

thanks for the pic james. i can't count how many times you have come to my aid with those types of things. i owe you. i talked a bit with my dad today, about the front suspension for ideas, and i have an apt, with a land rover master technician to talk front suspension geometry and theory. i hope to have a prototype to show him and to post on here by thursday. thanks for all of the encouragement....nice to see another PHR follower....i've got Malitude on the list of to-do's as well

Re: WIP: Phantom Fairlane...PRO TOURING

well, let me be the first to say, having something figured out. and then making it work, are two different things. lol. i've been fighting with the passenger side front suspension so i have a mock up to show my dad and the tech, and well. its been giving me fits. i went and bought some different superglue. its loctite super glue gel. im gonna see how this stuff works out for me.

I was looking through the referring URL reports for my website, Lateral-g.net, and found the link to this thread. There's some cool stuff in this section so I thought I'd sign up and make a post or two.

I'm looking forward to seeing your project of Charlie's Fairlane come together. I'll have to e-mail Charlie the link to this post - I'm sure he'd be interested too.

Another thing that caught my eye was Dukeman's 69 Camaro. The motor looks familiar. That's really cool.

Re: WIP: Phantom Fairlane...PRO TOURING

holy cow, your camaro is gorgeous. thanks for visiting. im a huge fan of the pro touring scene. We have had many discussions on this site about the pro touring, and our biggest hurdle is the wheel situation in the model world, and whips is what is most of hte time produced. hopefully i can stay away from that. I'm glad some of the 1:1 guys are making their way over. charlies fairlane is a gorgeous car, not a fan of the front seats lol. but it is awesome. i got the passenger side suspension done yesterday. but i've got to get around and get ready for orientation for fall 2005 at A&M Commerce so i can get on with my degree. if i get time i'll get some pics up of what i have done. stay tuned

Re: WIP: Phantom Fairlane...PRO TOURING

ok i've got a couple of pictures uploaded. the suspension is FULLY functional. if you notice in one pic, the lower a-arm is setting on the base of my lap top, and in the other, it is raised in the air.

Thanks! Its been a great project.

I went through the thread with Dukeman's 69 Camaro. The discussion of what is and what isn't 'pro-touring' never ends. lol

As you make progress on the Fairlane, feel free to post a few pics on the Lateral-g Forums. I know there would be a lot of admirers of your project.
