before i knew how to operate 4x4 correctly i had this problem too,
To fix your problme, put on neutral then switch to 4wd low or from 4wd and then you put on Drive, you cant switch to or from 4wd low on anything besides neutral. if that doesnt fix, reset computer but unplugging battery and connecting it back. |

Re: 96 explorer stuck in 4WD low
I have gotten stuck in 4x4 (2002 xls 4.0)while my vehicle was in Auto mode. I just disconnected the battery for a minute. It worked for me..3 times so far. Your shift motor on your transfer case may be the issue, or maybe your shift module behind the glove. You definately have to be in Nuetral to shift out of 4x4 LOW. Check your fuses. To do a full reset, disconnect batter for 10 minutes. Don't just start vehicle. Turn the key till dash lights allow it to cycle guages and then start it. It worked for me hope it helps you.
