Door Panel Removal
Anyone out there had experience in removing rear door panels on an S-Type (like I need to do to get at the defective window mechanism!). Any tricks or does the panel have snap off retainers? I don't want to go prying around and risk damage to paint or leather if not. My JTIS CD is useless in regard to this subject.
Thanks |

I just had to pull my drivers door for the same reason, I just grabbed the door panel up on the rear top and pulled it all off, they are just plastic snaps.
The drivers window stopped working. My wife came into the house and said it sounds like the window is broken. I opened it all up and pulled the cable/motor gear and the whole assembly out, its a mess it seems the aircraft cable jumped the plastic gear guides and kinked it all up. It looks to me that I might not be able to just replace the cable but maybe both tracks etc. |

Well I bought a whole new window regulator from Auto Parts world (online for 212.00 with shipping (2day airborne express) ups ground is free. It looks good I just need the time to install it this weekend, it looks easy everything is complete you just have to bolt up the motor and connect the brackets to the glass.

Re: Door Panel Removal
Just a few FYI's regarding window regulators for these S-types. Mine that broke was the left rear. Installation took some special homemade tools to properly remove and also install and seat the insert that fastens the track to the window glass, having to work through the small access port in the inner door sheet metal. Also took some patience as I recall! Best price was $96 including shipping from HalRogers.com. Other information from this and other forums was that the front door regulators supposedly are the same as on the Lincoln LS and perhaps can be found for cheaper prices as that part vs the Jaguar equivalent. Good luck on instatllation. It's amazing how predictable certain part failures are on these cars -- mine so far: thermostat, cooling system expansion tank, window regulator. Wife continues to think "it sure is pretty, though."

Most auto stores have cheap, simple tools made for reaching in between the panel and the door to pry loose the plastic keepers. It is like a wide flat fork bent at a slight angle at the end. The Jag S panels are held on by such keepers. I suggest you start at the very bottom of the panel and work your way up so you can spot each keeper as you go. As I recall, the most difficult area was that of the inside door handle since the handle is of course attached to the door frame but sticks through the panel in a small recessed section which has a plastic backing piece. I suggest that you work your way toward that handle area and just proceed carefully to work the panel free from that area. It has been some time since I did my left rear door, but I recall having to make some simple special tools to help hold the various nuts, retainers, etc. in place to make the final connection fo the glass to the mechanism while working through the limited openings in the door. You have my permission to have questionable thoughts of the designers as you do this. I know I certainly did. |

Re: Door Panel Removal
Hello,
Front window regulators are very easy. Two phillip screws in the little change holder. Buy a door panel tool to take off the inner door latch cover(start taking it off on the top, you wont break it, it is tough plastic and held in by little tabs. Now taking the door panel off. Yes be careful pulling it off there are 7-9 plastic fur trees. Once that is off set the panel in the car as if the door were closed. Take off the black insulator(looks like rubber mat) it has dum dum on it to secure it(messy) Partially remove the speaker assembly. Slide the window up enough to loosen the 2 10mm bolts that secure the window to the track. Then fully close the window(up). Disconnect the connection, 5 10mm nuts for the track assembly and remove it. No tricks to it. So tools needed, panel pry tool, *8mm deep socket, 10mm deep socket, phillip screw driver, 1/4 rachet, 1/4 6" ext. *Depends on audio package. Good luck. -Scott

Re: Door Panel Removal
My driver side front regulator broke today. Thanks to the above messages I was able to remove the door panel fairly easily. The window had fallen all the way to the bottom of the door and the cable and several broken pieces of plastic were also laying at the bottom of the door.
I'm concerned about installing a new regulator and getting the allignment right to connect it to the window. Given that I already have the door panel off, is this a repair I should be able to complete myself without any specialized tools? Wayne |

Re: Door Panel Removal
Wayne,
The alignment of the window is very simple. All you need to do is raise the window track 1/4 of the way up enough to see the mounts on the track. Requires a 10mm socket, very easy to align. When you think its good. raise window up and see if the top of the window goes past the black seal, if it does, you are set. |

Re: Door Panel Removal
I have noticed BAD window regulators plagued all car types.
When opening + closing doors make sure windows are all the way up or down. I never had a problem with one, until my sister slammed the door with the window half down in my Town-car. The cable on the window regulator will bounce around, the slamming of door it will bind-up. Than when you use the electric window, the cable will break. Re: Door Panel Removal
I have just finished replacing the second window regulator in my 2002 s. this car just reached 50,000 M and the parts break like clockwork. In the future I will try to open and close doors with window up. I had the mechanic change the first one and charged $550 for the work w/parts. It took me 2.5 hours to finish it. The plastic cup for the door latch lock trim was tricky but did not crack. A little debris fell in my eyes. None of the pop pins broke and The panel went back on very easily. I am encouraged by the other posts on this forum.
